Quique Setien

 Also, what huge downgrade over EV? EV was fired because he would've run this team into the ground this season with his 'tactics'. Nobody is saying Setien will be a great choice, but let's be real here, EV was good in his first season, decent in his 2nd, and crap in the current season.

OK lets not get carried away here with Ernie good and decent in the same sentence :D He was average at best in his first season, continued to be drab in the second and quite terrible this year...He has a lot to thank Messi for covering up his lack of any real tactics or team play... But agree about the other stuff..

Breath of fresh air. I'm happy that something has been done and that Valverde will be gone.

Above all I'm happy/hopeful that we will be able to see some nice attacking football.

Trophywise I am not sure what to expect. Hopefully we keep winning ligas and put up decent performances in the CL. He'll need to settle in quickly and seamlessly.

I've been reading a few people saying he's old. He's 61 not 71. Same age bracket as Ancellotti, as well as Wenger, Heynckes and SAF back when they were still active and successful.

My first choices would have been Pochettino or Ten Hag. However, I do think that Setién is a better choice than Xavi at this moment.

Real Betis play even worse football and are getting worse results after sacking Setien.

And that's after signing the striker Setien wanted and trading Lo Celso for Fekir which isn't a downgrade.

Real Betis were doing bad with Setien during their second half of the season for sure, but it's not like they've gotten any better.

And Setien will probably be crap so we'll make no progress at all but we'll spend more money if we decide to fire him in summer. So what's the point than? I clearly can't see none.

The difference is Ernie was crap. And Setien will or will not be crap.

Jupp Heynckes was 66 when Bayern brought him in in 2011 and only because they had no other choice, none of the top clubs were knocking on his door, but he got his hands on the right players and he proved to be a top manager. Up to that point he had been with midtable German and Spanish sides for 25 years and never won a trophy with any of them (apart from that 1 season at Real).

He won CL for first time in 32 years for Real Madrid, won 2 Bundesliga titles for Bayern.

How can anyone say he is currently worse than EV? We have been deteriorating in every single department. Defense, which was our strong point with EV has leaked two goals per game. What is Setien going to do? Average 3 goals conceded per game?

I predicted Valverde will fail and I am predicting Setien will fail even worse. That's all I have to say for now and if he proves me wrong I will be the first one to admit that.

He is a better alternative to Xavi for the rest of the season. If he sends rakitic away, he will deserve a spot at barca's hall of fame for that alone.

Yea, but Madrid are creating plenty of chances. They will start banging the goals soon. Hazard will be back. Suarez, our 2nd scorer after Messi is out for the season. Madrid's defense is much better. I'm telling you, winning La Liga this year is super tough.

We need to play much better than we've done so far, especially away, to win the title.

He had a tougher time with Hazard, as the latter is not the classic winger or poacher Zidane used to have. Like I said he is charismatic and has leadership but tactically it is holding him back and could easily find himself tied not knowing what to do, just plain experimenting with different players, like a mix and match. But always find himself trusting and dependant on his old experienced players. Their chances are not really much of a threat, anyone can so called pass their way and take random shots or even cross all the time. Their final third effectiveness is not what it used to be. Their defense is better because Zidane is more laid back but if they wanna win the title, they have to be on par with the firepower we have and especially a juggernaut like Messi is not to be messed with. Valverde's Barca is still quite comfortable on top. Any proper manager would see Barca way above Atletico and Madrid for sure.

Fools are already trashing Setien.

Must be a great way to arrive at the club with that support.

Most supported Valverde and they're sad he's gone. We have to be realistic here and accept Setien is among the best options that were available. Those who hated Valverde didn't hate Valverde when he signed. I went back and looked at the reactions when he came and almost everybody supported him at first.

So, the pro-Valverde camp should show some class and support the guy until proven otherwise.

He won't send anyone away. He will be a puppet. Thing is we are offering him 6 months deal and he want's more. I would just send him to hell and hire Pimienta at the moment.

Everyone can have their opinion and don't think much of someone. But given we have suffered ev for so long, you would expect some kind of patience at least.

Heynckes had still won leagues and a CL, though

He won CL for first time in 32 years for Real Madrid, won 2 Bundesliga titles for Bayern.

Heynckes won his titles at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, huge clubs with enormous resources, he won nothing with Schalke, Leverkusen, Tenerife or Bilbao etc. Setien hasn't had the opportunities until now, so let's see how he does but Las Palmas and Betis played great football so if he can translate that to Barca then I think he can do well and play exciting football.
