i'm still sticking with my treble trophies only argument. while the cup isn't as important as the other two, it is significant.

the cups only really lost significance when the champions league expanded and the cup winners cup folded.

before that they were valid competitions, but once it became all about top 4, champions league places, and the money that generates, well... people followed the money.

and that's the long and short of it.

Hamzah is right. Competing in so many competitions means u have so many matches to play and u cant focus on 1 single competition. If u only have 2 competitions left like Madrid (hahahahaha ha ha hahaha aha) it aint a big performance when u win some of them i.c.w. winning all of them.

Madrid act like they are selective at cups :D jesus. Another weaknes exposed.

well i think madrid were confident about getting some sort of double this year with the cl and liga. they didn't want their squad to be exposed for depth by having a long campaign in lots of trophies so they could keep thier stars for the cl and liga.

still, even if they don't respect the cup they should at least reach the semi's

Oh, they do care. They just couldn't win all the finals they were in.

Or show disrespect for their opponents.

I am Leg End
All that really matters in the grand scheme of things are the League and European Cup. Winning those 2 trophies are the barometer to how good you really are.

Depending on the cycle of the team winning the cups differs in importance. For a team starting a cycle then winning any sort of silverware is more important than getting to the quarters or semis of the CL and having no silverware. Whilst for a team that is in their peak the league and CL are the be all end all and regular appearances in the CL KO stages and becoming a top club are more important than winning cups.

I will take Liverpool for an example. 2001 we were just starting our cycle and were not expected to do much in the league thus the cups were our only source of tangible success. During that period I was hungry for trophies and did not care what trophies as we went 6 years without one. Winning the league cup in 2001 was a brilliant occasion for me because we started our cycle this was the first step on the ladder or the wheel going upwards to carry on with the cycle analogy. I didn't want to be in the CL and lose in group stages at that time or 2nd KO phase I wanted trophies.

If you asked me in 2001 would I want 3rd and no trophies (it was top 3 for CL football then) or 4th and no CL football but you'd win an fa cup and/or the uefa cup I would have grabbed with both hands the trophies. You see I wanted tangible success.

If you ask me in 2010 what I'd prefer, well TBH I DO want to win the FA cup and Europa cup. Winning european competitions adds gravitas to your club and I'd love to win our 4th uefa/europa cup. But I am desperate for CL football now I have tasted it and watched the magical occasions. Forget the money being in the CL is what its all about. So I want CL football. But you ask and man.city, Spurs of Villa fan if they want CL football or an fa cup or europa cup win and I think you'd get a different answer.

Do not discount tangible success rather than invisible success ie regular CL quarter or semi final appearances.

thanks for the reply. i was asking cause i heard nobody cared about it in those years and some top guns didnt even participated(not sure about that and lazy to google).

No everyone actually cared about it .. as before it there was the Latin club which had the champions of France,Spain,Italy,Portugal competing each year ..

the only FA which didn't participate at the beginning was the English FA , but soon Man United made way in the second (or third can't remember ) Edition and joined the rest..

Whatever man... even Nottingham Forest won that type of cup.... wait... even Crvena Zvezda, it makes you laugh eh ?

Since the "real" Champions League era it was like a whole different competition, and surely more difficult to pass through stages and win it.

That's very very very ignorant

Crvena & Nottingham were very strong at that time

go learn more about football history than come back to debate ..

Little kids these days , talk a lot like idiots without bothering to read first
