Why would Gio be disheartened by Mascherano arriving. He is the best DM in the world. So whilst that may happen, I don't believe that is why Gio is so upset.
If you can't get Morinho, then I do see Perez seeing Rafa as the next best thing. If that were the case I could definitely understand why Gio would be upset.
If its Gerrard and Gio is upset then I don't understand his emotion. Gerrard is a world class match changer and play in a variety of roles in the team. He may lack finesse but he has that brutal energy and physique that can definitely improve Madrid. Plus Alonso would be happy too.
Unless there is another scenario, which Gio is not telling us.

With Pepe, Garay, Ramos, Albiol all at CB and then Arbeloa at RB/LB and Marcelo at LB, would you really bring in another top class CB and make someone sit the bench? Pepe's coming back which means that Arbeloa can play full time LB if you want to move Marcelo up, and then Ramos at RB, with Albiol and Pepe at CB and Garay warming the bench. Don't see where Vidic would fit in that case. Surely he wouldn't want a Metzelder role, and neither would Albiol & Pepe right?
No way, Gerrard is rubbish and over the hill, and besides even if he were still good I'd still be upset if he were signing for Barca.

All players dive nowadays, its a fact of life.
Simple fact is Gerrard is a Match winner and can change a game, for liverpool, england or real madrid or wherever he goes. As an AM in that role there aren't many better in my book.

You can see Busquets, and Alves too, they're both so smirky and playful and they don't pretend. But Gerrard does. He's the ultimate ego maniac, caught up in his own world of Gerrardism, where he is captain fantastic and whatever he says and does is right. He can criticise other people for diving, he considers himself to be a role model, but it is excusable when he does it. He's such a hypocrite. Also, I strongly disagree that he is a match-winner for England, imo he's always been utterly shite for England and i don't think i've ever seen a good performance from him. For me, Gerrard is a player who has no skill, no finesse, he's just an ugly and awkward player to watch. What he does have is a massive shot on him, and 70% of the time it works. He just needs to close his eyes and take a smack at the ball and if it goes in, well he's off to celebrate. But now that he's hitting the 30 mark he's probably losing the same fitness he had before and he just isn't able to reproduce the same form, as was evident this season. Now he can't run his socks off and get into good positions. Real Madrid succeed when they have players like Guti passing awesome through balls to their world class finishers a la Raul, RVN, Higuain... Real Madrid don't need Gerrard, who isn't known for his passing.

Gerrard will not be able to adapt to La liga imo especially with him ageing.
He is built for EPL. His physique, power, energy will not halp him greatly in Spain. If he was more tecnical and able to dribble then he may have a chance but he is too old now.
