From my Biology studies back in school, i learnt that you can't cure sickle cell anemia. It is a lifelong genetic disorder.
It happens to Africans as their bodies' genetic, evolutionary response to the threat of Malaria. Lass will never contract malaria, which is a plus side. However, it will never "go away" or "come back" - his blood cells will always be shaped in an uneven, sickle-like manner.
I doubt his career will be over because of this, so many people have it, you just have to manage it very carefully and maintain your blood thinness, however as long as he is able to restrict the occurrences of complications - which is possible through intake of certain minerals and medicines - he should be fine...

Coincidentally my Bio teacher had sickle cell anemia, but she also had the double threat of a heart problem which meant that when her heart skipped a couple of beats she would faint! That's a more serious case though and it isn't a situation where she only had sickle cell anemia.

Bio question time! Which amino acid in the RBC causes sickle cell anemia (AA number and name) <_<?
