Well, Lucio was rubbish in Bayern when he moved to Inter where he looked great again so who knows. Carvalho might be a hit.
Thing that bugs me is that Chelsea gets 8 million for him while we release Rafa who is younger than Carvalho for nothing. Like noone would pay couple of million for a defender of Rafa´s quality.

carvalho hasn't really been rubbish for chelsea, though.

injured, yes, but not rubbish.

lucio struggled in his final year at munich and rafa was a walking disaster zone last season for us. plus they had expiring contracts.

but mostly it's because they were shit.

carvalho has been chelsea's best defender, and at times the PL's best defender, since he moved there. even last season they looked a better defensive team with him available.

the only reason why this is an iffy transfer is carvalho is A) old, B) injury-prone and C) now in a league where his filthy tackles may be clamped down on (maybe not, though, he is a master of the dirty foul).

otherwise it's a decent purchase.

I will discount this purchase as a 100% Mourinho buy. This is perfect. Every successful coaches takes a player or two along with them, Maicon would have delivered but considering the price difference and Ramos' availibility, this is a very good option at a very good price. I do not want to repeat what Beast said but I disagree with Super Pippo on this one. Carvalho has been mentioned and on Madrid's radar for quite some time. If there is a time to get him, it is now. This one won't last too long but players like Garay and Albiol are the future. In order to see them come through, experience on the training ground is required. Carvalho will make mistakes this season, no doubt. People will be quick to come out and point the finger saying, I told you so, I told you so. I told you Carvalho is old and will get sent off and what not. That is okay. On the training ground, Albiol will learn how to turn, how to tackle, Garay will learn how to better position himself better to make up for his lack of pace. Carvalho will be able to make it easier on Mourinho to explain the details, as he will put Mourinho's words into action. Pique became who he is off the pitch, not on it. At Manchester United he trained with the best for 4 years. Defenders are like that, its drills, and more drills, its hard wired into your brain. You do not naturally learn to be goal-side-ball-side, you do not naturally learn to mark your zone, you do not naturally learn to keep an eye on your man, you do not naturally learn to communicate with your team mates and the goal keeper. Someone needs to be there with you showing you in detail. Someone needs to be there encouraging you to drop and commit. Its actually scary, not only difficult.

pure experience and a pure mourinho signing...logical signing though, carvalho is who mourinho trusts blind folded. their journey continues: porto, chelsea, inter (he tried before he went on and signed lucio) and finally real madrid...6 years later and about 12m € cheaper :p

i was wondering...given this years transfer policy, the money spent on players, the low age average causing a certain "need" to add experience (hence carvalho), drenthe being worthless and as good as gone, what are the chances of madrid signing capdevila?

just asking, not promoting! it would be a logical step IMO. like carvalho, he would add a hell lot of experience, be cheap, get a contract of 2 seasons and would probably make an all in all better job than marcelo as the LB.

ramos-----albiol-----carvalho-----capdevila

as long as pepe is injured.

Hm, Lucio wasnt rubbish, esp. not regarding his whole almost 10 yrs in the league. Bayern had a weak season before he departed, but Lucio was among the best 2-3 in an underwhelming team. The only reason why he was constantly underrated was imo b/c he was only playing in the Bundesliga.

Oh and i think Carvalho is a very fortunate buy for RM. Not only b/c i still rate him as a good defender, but b/c he will be Mourinhos right hand on the pitch, knowing exactly what Mou wants from the team and being a key support for the defensive transition.

Really good signing for Madrid. What Carvalho brings to the side is his competitiveness. He is a winner and line-leader. Mourinho gets a player with a similar attitude to him on the pitch. I think Madrid have singed a really cagey player to add maturity and leadership to the back which is exactly what they needed.

nandor, why did you just pick capdevila out from? nowehere. the starting line up you guys post in here changes each time because you throw in whatever player you like that paticular moment.

Isn't he a tad old? (Carvalho)

And Madrid would have been much better off had they signed Maicon instead of Mou...it is players that win games...not coaches...

Excellent signing for Madrid and a typical Jose move. I actually think that this purchase has more to do about the relationship between the two portugeezers than his playing skill. Jose needs to have at least one player within the squad that can translate his tactical apporach from the training pitch to an actual match situation. He will be his right hand man at the club being his eyes and ears amongst the players.

Now all the slots are gone, will Madrid have to sell before they buy anyone else?

1.Julio Cesar-some say the best keeper in the world.

2.Lucio and Samuel-with the form of their lives.

3.Maicon-probably the world's best RB

4.Cambiasso-one of the best in his position(if not the best)

5.Wesley Sneijder-Real Madrid given gift-brilliant player,Ballon d'Or contender.

6.Eto'o-gift from Barca...plus 50m euros.

7.Zanetti-Mr Consistency

8.Milito-surely one of the top 5 strikers in the world(some say,the best)

*Jeez...what idiot can't see that Mourinho is the GOD of football?
