Samuel Umtiti

What he did in that interview was really disrespectful towards the club. Should have said that he has a contract with Barca and that he respects that. Seems like he learned something from Neymar. Anyway he isn't as good as some people think he is, makes some silly mistakes and loses his composure and concentration easily. Sell him and sign Lenglet from Sevilla.

Ingenious move by him and his manager. With one word he got what he wanted, a huge fuss and additional pressure on our board.
I don't think he'll go to MUN but he will for sure demand 9 mil and as things stand right now that's understandable. If Laporte is worth 7 or 8 mil net per season than Umtiti is worth 9 without a doubt. Anyone who says that he wouldn't do the same thing is a hypocrite because we all would. That's a fact!

If the board is offering 6 and he want's 9 they might find the agreement somewhere between 7 or 8 but for 6 mil he won't stay for sure. Why would anyone agree to 30% lower salary? No way he is going to do that.

Quite the opposite, it's a stupid move. You can see from the reaction of the fans that if the board decide to sell him now their decision will be understood and supported by the fans. So he eased the pressure on the board and didn't make himself any favor. 60m is a good price of for him and you can easily replace him with this money. The board should make their offer, which should be nowhere near that 9m and tell him he if free to go if he wants.

I don't know in what world do you live in but with 60 mil you can't do shit in today's market.

Was Umtiti a proven star when Barca signed him?
Umtiti is overrated and Vermaelen was just as good if not better in his position.

Umtiti isn’t overrated. Probably the 2nd most consistent player behind Messi for the past year.

He’s made a couple of mistakes in the last 2 months but no player is perfect.

Actually he makes some silly mistakes in nearly every game but people don't remember many of them because they don't result in goals. So he isn't that consistent.

Yeah for that 1 month when he was injury free
Overrated?

We are comparing defensive qualities and that month was full of important games.
Yes he is overrated.

Villarato!
He joined the club two years ago and yes he is perhaps one of the best CBs out there right now but I still find it ridiculous that he wants to be paid as much as Pique and Iniesta, two club legends.

As DHorozov said, he doesn't want as much, but he does want enough to warrant him being treated as a leader of the defense he is expected to become. It is absolutely normal he wants a wage in the range to match what's expected of him in the future. If he were to sign a 7M deal, and within 3 years with Pique being a melody of the past, he would reenter negotiations to ensure he is absolutely one of the top5 earners on the team. It's natural.

His current contract is through 2021, by that time he will be 27, he can still earn a lot more if he keeps up his current levels and improve so I don’t think he wants to lock in a decent salary right now.

Lol what? He's on something like £3.5M right now. Getting that contract penned is his and his agent's priority to make sure he isn't stuck on a shitty deal earning twice less than he actually can if negotiated properly. The wage range he's on right now is designed for role players coming off the bench, not a starter and arguably a soon-to-be stalwart.

What do you mean by “He's a French minority player and only the English are worse for chasing money on their contracts.”? So the club should have seen this coming because he is French and he is black?? Oh-uh, should we start worrying about Dembele too?

Not precisely, it doesn't devolve to race that simply. Plenty of players who are black and fall in the bin of average wage for their ability.

However, first generation ethnic minority players of non-European descent do tend to worry about their families' livelihood levels more so than the white Europeans do, so they'll wind up their big contracts more often, especially when playing for a club with tremendous assets like RM, City, United, Barca, Juve or PSG. It isn't a linear relationship, but a more likely correlation.

Martial for example is on £65K and is going to go through the very same process within 2-3 years.

Umtiti is simply accelerating the process by trying to squeeze 2 large contracts for himself as a CB rather than just 1 (usually signed for CB prime ~28-33 years of age). It's only a good business strategy.

But if he does leave simply because Manchester United pays him more (other than that I can’t think of another reason to join Manchester United) then he is a mercenary. If PSG comes knocking with 15m a year salary he would probably ditch Manchester United to join PSG.

Dunno about either of these statements. Is Carrasco a mercenary? Was Ramos a mercenary when he was in the middle of negotiations with Perez a few summers ago when he threatened to leave, because he was being offered a contract not befitting an RM captain? Nah. Many a time these guys are working out the terms of their largest deal they're going to get in their careers. For CBs it's even more dramatic, because they only get 2 chances at most at getting their way. With Umtiti at 24, they're doing just that - gauging how far they can push. Player himself could have many possible reasons for trying this so calling the dude a mercenary at this stage is unwarranted, even if ATM it seems like he's hoping for a move to England.

I wouldn't approach this as an exit strategy in the slightest. Only Raiola's clients are fucked up in the head enough to alienate the clubs they work for.
