Dude, we are just trying to get rid of the deadweight for now. Players who would have made no difference anyway. There is no substance or depth lost yet. Same should have happened without the Messi situation as well.

True for example Firpo barely played and Trincao was way over his head playing for Barca.

Not much lost there.

Umtiti garbage backup, same with Pjanic who added nothing.

Makes sense, alluded to this before. We have a player who can't perform his job to the level he was contracted to and refuses to budge.

It's still going to cost us quite a few million to terminate his contract, so we won't be saving that much money in any case. I honestly think it's pointless terminating contracts of your high earners.

I get that they're trying to ease the wage bill for the La Liga cap so Messi can sign, but you're just paying out millions and putting us in further debt.

Umtiti and Pjanic won't budge. They'll either go out on loan or they'll expect to be paid well if their contracts are terminated, which will cost us a fortune..... which is bad for a team that's in terrible debt.

Like who?

Just that I've seen rumours floating about that they'll also try to remove some of our important players if needs be. Not sure who they are, but it's what I've seen.

You also have to understand that moving some of backup depth won't lower the wage bill that much in any case. It'll have to be a lot of the high earners.

Sounds like bullshit then. No idea why you feel the need to advance such a narrative against Messi.

Other than that it's open season in Barcelona: Umtiti, Pjanic, Coutinho, Junior, Braithwaite and possibly Roberto and Dembele should all be gone. Most of them high earners as you said. Still think it won't be enough for Messi to stay though without doing something shady, which I am against.

Well... we can't get rid of Dembele and I doubt we can get rid of Coutinho due to him only coming back from a long injury. I doubt Junior and Braithwaite would be that much. In any case, not sure how we're going to get below the salary cap to keep Messi here. Unless we sell Griezmann, de Jong, Dembele, Coutinho, Busquets, Alba and Pique, which is never going to happen. They're realistically only the players we can release/sell/loan who can put us under the salary cap.... and we'd probably have to get rid of most if not all of them to achieve it.

Barotmeu thought he was doing us a favour by keeping Messi here for one more year, but releasing Messi last season would have helped us out so much. Could have save 134m from his salary, another 33m from his loyalty fee, got a potential 50m to 70m for a transfer fee for him, then saved another 20m to 30m from his signing-on fee if he resigns, then saved another 120m euros for the next 2 years. All in all, we could be saving around 400m euros. I get Messi used to bring in a lot of money for the club, but that changed once COVID hit. I doubt Messi has brought in anywhere close to what he used to in the past 18 months.

Grim times ahead.

That's beside the point. You claimed there's a chance we would let more important players go, which I think is nonsense. Most of the high earners are deadweight or misfits bar Frenkie, Busquets and Alba. And the chance for them to leave is pretty slim. So no worries we are ripping our team apart for Messi.

Huh?

Most of our high earners are in squad or they're not deadweight. They include Dembele, Coutinho (he'll probably be a starter due to Koeman liking him), de Jong, Pique, Busquets, Griezmann, Alba and Roberto (he's a backup player who almost comes off the bench in most games). Heck, even ter Stegen is on a high amount a week for a goalkeeper. So, that's 9 players who start or they come off the bench and play decent minutes. We only have 2 players who we can consider misfits like Umtiti and Pjanic.... and it's going to be hard to get rid of those players due how much they're earning and the lack of playing time in the last 12 months. No teams want to take a gamble on those type of players with high wages during COVID.

Regardless, if Messi resigns, we apparently need to reduce the wage bill by 200m euros, which is looking very unlikely. I just don't see how we can reduce the wage bill by 200m euros.

According to Marca, he has refused to leave.
Keep earning 8M vs leaving for free and earning 500k, bet he didn't have a hard time deciding.

dude has a contract until 2023. the only way to reach mutual termination would be to negotiate a fee with him and get rid.

two more years with us would earn him ~16M net. he could very well ask half that or something like 10M in order to terminate his contract.

best scenario would be to offer him for free to other clubs and hope that they'll cover his salary demands. otherwise he might ask for us to cover the difference in salary for the next 2 years.

He wants the full amount... he knows it's his last big cash grab. And who can blame him, I would do the same.

Releasing Umtit and Pjanic is going to cost us around 60m to 70m, so it's never going to happen. If we were to loan them out, I doubt we'd get the full wages for him. I think teams will only want to pay around 50% for them due to them being on big wages.
