I thought you already learned people here are willing to throw any player under the bus if he god forbids runs into poor form for a few games.
Vermaelen is only as good as Umtiti once he shows it consistently for as long as Umtiti has done so for Barcelona. As far as I'm concerned that's where any argument ends.

He's not in great form for the past few games but I noticed that ever since Sport published those shitty rumors that Umtiti was requesting 9 million a year and is strongly considering United, got people to really start doubting him and start to throw him under the bus quickly.
You got people talking about how Umtiti is so easily replaceable and started to downplay what he has shown since he got here as "Pique was the one carrying him all along" even though there were a number of games where Umtiti and even Verm had to pick up the slack as Pique either was off form and not focused enough.
The way I see it is the Sport articles did the job it clearly intended to do and that is to create a narrative that Umtiti comes off as greedy and that his wage demands are outrageous and that no one should be above the club and that when push comes to shove he is easily replaceable.
But at this point the damage is done or so even if rac1 reported that Umtiti had no offers from United and that United are not targeting him this summer.

Piqué has been our best CB this season. When Vermaelen played he was on a level with Umtiti.

Vermaelen has done well when he's come in but you can't rely on him, it's that simple. As for Pique being our best defender this season, that's simply not true. Been better recently, but for the first half of the season Umtiti carried him. Of course, a few bad games and a contract dispute and that's all forgotten. Umtiti would be a huge loss. Wouldn't pay him the rumoured 9 mill or whatever though.

Umtiti is a younger player and and can be the to cornerstone of our defense for the next decade, but if we're speaking in terms of performances this season Verm has been just as good as Umtiti.
Everyone was crying about how our season was over earlier in the year when Umtiti went down for 8 weeks, but Verm came in and we didn't miss a beat.
Question: Has Umtiti's absences from our lineup impacted our defense negatively at all this season?
Not saying Umtiti has been bad, in fact he's been excellent and one of our top performers this season, but Verm has been just as good. My comment wasn't meant as a knock against Umtiti at all.
