Scholes Vs Xavi (Not a direct comparison thread)

Zidane:

"Is Steven Gerrard the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be."

"If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team."

but he said that once. after Gerrard & Liverpool rinsed Real. he's also praised other players in a similar manner several times, including Scholes.

but Xavi has repeatedly praised Scholes. he's not just paying lip-service to the man.

I wouldn't get too excited about comments like that...Ask them privately whether English players let alone the game is hyped beyond oblivion and then get your real answer...Consider the setting, English interview

this

players talk bullshit to the media.

Only one thing Scholes was better than Xavi shooting.
But given their abilities they are two of the most underrated players in football's history.

You guys laugh at fans who you class as biased etc, but do you not realise just how biased and ridiculous some of you seem to non-Barcelona fans...it is exactly the same as when you criticise those fans, what a lot of you do here.

Scholes is considered as an absolute legend of the game, just search these forums there is a video of literally all the top footballers saying he's one of (if not THE) greatest midfielders of all time. He was the best, and comparisons between him and Xavi are very reasonable. If you guys don't think so you should ask yourselves if you know more than the likes of Zidane who would (and has) said the same.

But of course hes English and Xavi is Spanish. So thats minus ten points for Scholes and plus ten points to Xavi.

They are both true monsters of the game...take off your blinkered specticles for two seconds and you might recognise as much.

Marc Crosas is Spanish too, and he's shit.

It's just that Xavi is one of the greatest midfielders of all time, and Scholes is not. He's like the ghetto version of Xavi; why settle for less?

These are the sort of pointless discussions brought up in an thinly veiled attempt to boost one player over another or to undercut the most successful central midfielder in generations...Scholes was great, he's a United legend but it's the sort of English drivel of hyping their stars that nauseate me...Nevermind that they are two very different players, what criteria would be used to even compare them?...Goals?...Big deal, Xavi isn't a goalscorer...Passing, vision & assists?...It's like the a 'cold night in Stoke' argument with English fans...Pumping players from a bygone era, it's like a desperate attempt to maintain some relevancy when Spanish football rules the planet

And no, I don't hate United, I despise fluffing English footy

could not have put it better. Although Scholes has been the most gifted midfielder of English football in years he was never as good in his prime as Xavi and Iniesta are. English fans didn't even appreciate Scholes until recently. Probably because he could play tippy tappy football and not launch it long because that doesn't show passion

Scholes IS one of the best ever. Curious what makes your opinion more valid than mine?...is it because your Barca bezzies here agree with you?

At least people like myself try to see arguments form both sides of the coin, whereas you only ever see it from your Barca/spanish fanboy perspective unfortunately.

Xavi would say the same.

Xavi has huge admiration for Scholes.

His face lights up first when he is told the story of Wayne Rooney getting up from his couch to give Barca a one-man standing ovation in his living room as he watched them beat Real Madrid 5-0 last November, and then when he reels off the names of his current Premier League favourites.

‘Rooney, Scholes, Cesc (Fabregas), Nasri and Giggs,’ he says, adding: ‘I was also a big fan of John Barnes, Chris Waddle and Matt Le Tissier. And although it is a different style, I liked the Paul Ince and Roy Keane partnership Manchester United had. They would have been my team had I moved to England.’

Paul Scholes receives special praise: ‘In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything.

‘He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.’

its kinda like comparing ronaldo and messi, yes ronaldo is great, one of the best to kick a football, but messi is one of the all time greats.

Scholes in Ronaldo, one of the best of his generation
Xavi is Messi, arguably the best CM ever.

Scholes in his prime was bossing hoofball teams in the Premier League of the 90s. Xavi in his prime was bossing Alex Ferguson's arguably greatest squad in a CL final, Germany in a EC final and WC semi-final and the most expensive squad in football history, Real Madrid, on numerous occasions. Scholes is a wonderful player. Playing almost 20 years for the most successful Premier League team of the past 2 decades automatically earns him a lot of respect. The fact that our La Masia players are holding him in such high esteem has also a lot to do with the fact that this little, humble, technically gifted fella (a La Masia type of player like Xavi himself) was overlooked and underrated for so long by the English media / fans / England NT coaches and not because Xavi actually believes that Scholes is THE best midfielder of all time (like Zidane claiming that Makelele was the most important Real Madrid player ahead of himself or Raul or Figo or Ronaldo after the unfair treatment he received from Perez). Meta said it about Makelele. I'll say it about Scholes: he got underrated for so long that in hindsight people try to make up for it now by placing him among the likes of Xavi. That's not how things roll though. First assist in a EC final, in 2 CL finals, 4 times in a single match against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, create most goal scoring chances in a WC tournament, make it to the Ballon d'Or shortlist for the third consecutive time and then come back again.

Bossing Premier League teams alone won't cut it to be right up there with Xavi. Fabregas was also doing that at age 17.

No, it's probably because when it's all said and done Xavi will be recognized as the better player. Worldwide that is. We'll have to wait some more years for confirmation.
