Playing a high risk passing game in defense is crucial for our play. Our players are instructed to do that.
Sorry, have you watched Barca before Messi and before Pep?
Yes, it is our style, but once again, it is one of the key reasons both:
1. why we play beautiful
2. and why we almost NEVER won CLs before Messi
Almost every of our CL campaigns from 1990-2006 ended in the same fashion:
1. Barca played nice and it seemed that we are controlling the play
2. the opponent bangs goal after goal either from counterattacks or after individual mistakes from our players in passing around our box
Without Messi, we were just a naive team who was always losing in key matches.
With Messi, we managed to neutralize 1-2 goals conceded from counters and after individual mistakes with Messi's 2-3-4 goals in the opponent's net.
Remove Messi from these maths, and we will again be good, old, naive Barca if we'll continue to play 100% dumb with passing around the box in EVERY single action.
Milan 4:0 1994:
-- 1st goal, Nadal keeps a possession with a header, while he could have kicked the ball upfield or something. We concede for 0:1 right away
-- 3rd goal, look at "a resolute" clearance from our defender. We conceded right away for 0:3, match is finished after that moment
Valencia 4:1 2000:
-- 2nd goal, individual mistake in an action build up deep in our half
-- 3rd goal, somewhat poor clearance before a pen (the ball could have been kick out better and further)
Bayern 1:2 1998:
-- just look at overall defending of our team (1st goal for example). You always have a feeling that they are close to a ball and that they can just kick it upfield, but no
Anyway, just open a youtube and watch Barca's CL knockout matches in 90s and until 2006, and more or less every match will look the same.
We conceded goals from either comical allround defending, or from individual mistakes when we try to pass the ball around our box.
There is a very strong reason why Barca won only one CL (in 1992) before Messi.
So, yes, passing around our the box is our style, but it hasn't brought us too many titles in our history before Xavi-Messi duo.
Before Xavi, a guy who managed to bring our passing style to a more intelligent and effective level.
And before Messi, who managed to save our asses each time with his individual out of this world brilliance.
So, imo, NO, passing a ball around our box in 100% of times=is not a way to go.
We need to be more pragmatic and just kick the ball upfield in some dangerous moments.
