Now that we are bragging about who believed in Busi when, I'm going to tell you about the first time I saw him. I went to a pre-season friendly in the summer of 2008, in a game where Hleb scored what is probably his only goal for Barsa with a magnificent pass from Iniesta, along with a goal from Xavi, a brace by Eto'o (I believe both assisted by Jeffren, or at least one), and a header from a corner kick by JM Caceres (props for whoever can figure out which match). You might note Messi's absence in any of the brief highlights, and then you'll remember it was the year of the Beijing Olympics, which caused some massive bitch fighting between clubs and national federations. Naturally, it was a big disappointment for most fans that Messi went to China, but I was looking forward to the game because it would be a good chance to see how well Guardiola would do, as well as a good chance to see some up and coming youngsters. I drew mostly positive conclusions from the match, and one of the negative conclusions was Dani Alves, who was at fault for one of the goals conceded, but I gave him the benefit of doubt.
Three youngsters stood out that day. Jeffren came out in the second half and caused disaster down the wings, leading to assisting Eto'o's goals, as noted earlier, but I already knew about him, so that was no surprise. Funnily, he ended up injured and was substituted. The two other youngsters are now the fully established internationals, world cup winners Pedro and Busquets. The conclusions I drew from the two were not quite the same. I was pleasantly surprised by Pedro, who was his hyperactive self, and scored an amazing goal which unfortunately did not modify the scoreboard because the ball hit the post, went in narrowly but bounced out, much like Lampard's against Germany this year in the WC. My conclusions for Busquets were different. He stood out not because of his footballing ability, but because of his lanky frame and because what a bitch he looked like whenever he got tackled. This combination was irresistibly funny to me, but needless to say, I had no hope for him. Over the 2008-2009 season, he won me over and I now openly admit how wrong I was. Viva Busi!
