We knew he can't do anything in attack but lately he does nothing in defense either. He has no competition and suffers from lack of motivation.
Mascherano had a superb World Cup at dm, holding the midfield practically on his own and has deserved a chance to start there for Barca as well. He distributes the ball faster, can shoot and is as much of an interceptor as Busquets.
Busquets in his prime is probably better but that Busquets is lost in 2011.

I agree that we should try Masche at DM because of the superb WC form and the fact our play has changed since the days of Pep when Masche failed at DM, but come on, Busi can't do anything in attack?
He is an amazing passer of the ball, his through balls and passes between the lines are vital to our style of play. Also he is much better then Masche at intercepting but Masche is better at tackling, especially sliding tackles, and the fact that Masche can shoot better doesn't matter anyway because he is never going to find himself in a position to shoot while playing DM for Barca.

Man, he offers so little when we attack that it seems as if we're playing with one man less. Pique, Bartra and Mathieu with their bursts forward create more by their mere energy.
I think time has come to re-think the whole dm position. Madrid and Bayern do well without it whereas we just look like playing with player down when attack with the same player who can't even defend lately.
Busquets worked under pep and with Xavi and Iniesta at their prime. Now he's just exposed as a average player. Compared to Touré he's class below.

Busquets has groin muscles problems for more than two years now and could undergo surgery next summer. [marca]

That's just not true. He is not a class below toure, never was. And he is contributing to the attack too. Against athletic, both goals started with an interception of Busquets. There are other pre assists to his name too. His hernia problem is taking its toll, that can't just be ignored.

He was sub-par against PSG but still one of our best players this season and I find it sad when people forget about this because of 1 game. He's had problems against high pressing opposition (like last year against Atlético) but the whole team has, others were a lot worse against PSG but still don't get that much stick. In general, if the system doesn't work, he doesn't work. If we keep up intense pressing and strangle the opponent with possession, he excels. We should look to make our system work and not give up possession that much before singling out a player who has been pivotal to our success in the current campaign.

Absolutely true.
What people also need to realize is that nearly all players around Busi changed compare to the seasons when we were dominating Europe and when he was the best defensive mid on the planet.
There is no prime Xavi on his right (or anywhere), no Puyol behind him, no defensive minded LB behind him and especially this year there is no attacking mid (Iniesta) close to him.

Busi's biggest strength is to keep the ball moving as fast as possible. We all know his one touch passes where his release seems to make it half a touch. But for that he needs at least 2 players play very close to him which is not the case now.
Without the ball he had to cover way too many space under Tito and Tata but that is one thing that Lucho improved.

Let Busi have some time to adapt to the new system and my personal wish: Give him more rest! He only missed a handful of games in the last 3 years didn't he? That affects a player's performance.

Yeah no kidding should of had it right after the world cup if he had the option. But I guess he thinks he can ride it until next summer which has no international tournament for him.

That never stopped people to point out scapegoats. Like Cesc for instance, and his notorious bad in the 2nd part of the season label, a thing I could say about pretty much every Barca player from 2012 onwards with few exceptions. Still, Busi has had pretty mild criticism, after some bad performances in key games over the past few seasons (most of them in the 2nd part of the season btw).

His form dropped after 2012.

I was always of the opinion that Cesc's bad form in the second part of the season had more to do with the team's bad form than with himself and I think he will prove it at Chelsea. You have to consider that as teams progress in the respective competition, opponents become better, which invariably leads to harder matches in the 2nd part of the season. Yes, Busquets form dropped after 2012, but the whole team became a lot worse after Pep left. I still maintain that he has been one of our best players this season.

Busquets has been nominated for the trophy of best Liga midfielder of last season. Other nominees: Gabi (Atletico) and Modric (Real Madrid).
