So much confidence that you are actually better than Benfica? Valencia ok, but I see Sevilla having a hard time with Benfica. I see Juve-Benfica as a final as long as they don't draw each other in the semis.

Benfica took on and didn't demolish a weak AZ, while we did so against a tough and motivated Porto. I didn't say that any of the draws could be a piece of cake, however, with this team and this form, we can beat any team in our night. Look at the match against RM, no one expected, but still, 3 points went to the mighty Sevilla !

Emery is really showing this season why he is the best "young" Spanish coach out there. He managed to guide a mediocre Valencia through the worst years in the clubs recent history, losing all of their best players every year. Now he is doing miracles again with Sevilla, working with second rate players transforming them into formidable foes for any team to face.

From my perspective, Emery is the most underrated coach in Spain and has been for the last several years.

First he guides Lorca to promotion from 2b league in his first year as a coach (2004-05). In his first year in Segunda (2005-06) he finish 5th with fucking Lorca, nedless to say, when he leaves, Lorca goes straight back to 2b (21th in Segunda 2006-07).

His new team is Almeria, a team that finished 6th in 2005-06, just behind Emerys Lorca. In his first season in charge, he guides Almeria to promotion, finishing second place, the highest position for Almeria since 1980!

In his first season in Primera (2007-08), and the first season for Almeria in Primera since 1980, he finish 8th, the highest ever position for Almeria in the top tier.

Now Valencia knock on the door, a team in complete disaster, having finished 10th, the lowest league finish for Valencia since 1996. In his first season in charge of Valencia he guides the team to win Copa del Rey and finish in a respectable 6th place.

In his second season in charge of Valencia (which is a team under severe austerity due to the stadium fuck up) Emery guides the team to an impressive third position, the best league finish since Benitez in 2003-04. In Europe he guides the team to a quarter final in Europa league losing to eventual winners Atletico de Madrid on away goal rule.

In his third season in charge of Valencia (having lost both David Silva and David Villa) he again manage a third position in the league, a miracle feat if you ask me considering losing the teams 2 best players.

In his 4th season in charge of Valencia, he manage again a third place in the league, even though he again lost the 2 best players in Juan Mata and Joaquin. He also reached semifinals in Copa del Rey losing to eventual winners Barcelona and the Europa league losing to eventual winners Atletico de Madrid.

for all of his miracles with Valencia, he is fired, Karma is served and Valencia finish fifth the next season. And now Karma will be served again as Sevilla will knock out Valencia of Europa League, muhahah.

Nice analysis there Xtroverto. Hopefully the last sentence that you wrote will become true ( I don't want Karma to hit Sevilla in the future though :p)

It is very true that Emery is a decent manager. He is quite underrated and I think that is what gives him space to come up with a lot of surprising, yet positive things. A couple of months ago I know that a lot of Sevillistas (including me) were calling for his head, but now everyone is amazed of his work. The thing with Emery is that sometimes he makes very weird decisions, like some silly rotations, silly substitutions and such. Yet in the end, he always seems like he knows what he is doing. Emery is that kind of manager that needs everyone to be patient with him as his results may not show in short term but they definitely will in long term. He is also know to be a good motivator and works his ass around the bench to give directions etc. kind of like Simeone. He is very passionate in his job and you can also see that from his gestures during a match. I like those kind of managers.

When the fans wanted Emery out not very long ago, the president called for patience, and it has paid off. Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that this team is NEW... like really new. Sevilla sold/loaned out/released almost an entire team and loaned in/bought/promoted from youth ranks almost an entire team. 90% of the players never played with each other, so it was certainly difficult for any coach, not just Emery, to try and make this team gel and play good in their first season.

I'm confident in Emery now, even though I still sometimes don't understand his decisions, like in the last match against Betass where Marin was not called up for technical decision, without explanation, yet he performed in almost all of the last matches and performed quite well. We managed to win 0-2. Reyes played one of the worst matches of his career and didn't get substituted... but hey, it's Emery !

Well, that Sevilla would struggle this season, at least I was expecting that. If you sell the 4 best players without replacing them with players of similar quality you have to expect that the team will struggle. Still, evidently the old Monchi was back for the summer transfer window. He managed to find some real gems this time after a few years of several bad transfers. I don't think anyone was expecting Bacca to perform to the level he has, neither was anyone expecting Gameiro to be quite as good as he has been. He also manage to find some decent player on loan deals, both Pareja and Carriço have been useful. Also Beto for less than 1 million was a good signing I think.

I think Emery has performed above what you could expect at the start of the season, he has a decent chance of catching Athletic Bilbao in 4th place and has managed to get the most out of players like Iborra, Moreno, Pareja, Marin etc. My own prediction was that Sevilla would end 7th or 8th based of the fact that they didn't actually replace Negredo, Gary Medel, Kondogbia or Navas. Basically Emery lost his best players and had to do with whatever Monchi could find on the second hand market.

I like Athletic, but I also want Sevilla to do well. Only one CL place to fight out for. May the best win it.

Sevilla lead 2-0.

First goal M'bia was well offside. Lovely finish but shocking from the linesman.

Can't rule Valencia out, especially after the game v Basle.

Agreed, Valencia shouldn't be ruled out, however, I've got information here in the forum from a local Basel supporter that they have played without 5-6 key players, missing through suspension/injury and even invited some of the U-19 team for the bench. Moreover... this is the mighty Sevilla :p

It was a nice match in general, both teams looking to play some good football, and one team was the best tonight. Worth mentioning is also that Sevilla could've easily scored at least 3 more goals, no luck.

If we approach the second leg with the same mentality and intensity, we are in Turin in 14th of May !

Congrats to Sevilla fans for their win.

Thanks man.

Tomorrow will be a big match for us. '4th spot finale' they are calling it, but I wouldn't judge it like that, as there are 3 more matches to play after tomorrow's one, and a lot of things could change, you never know.

Fatigue will hurt Sevilla, but we still believe.

VAMOS MI SEVILLA, VAMOS CAMPEON !!!!!!

It was always a dilemma... going all the way for EL or going all the way for the 4th spot.... what I'm mad about is that Sevilla didn't even try to reach the 4th spot tonight, or more accurately, Emery didn't give a crap for the 4th spot tonight.

His approach was catastrophic... we didn't have this approach even against RM, which we beat and outplayed in the second half. Emery's formation was built in that way so Sevilla shouldn't concede until 75-80th minute... and then everything was screwed after that lucky goal from the corner for Bilbao.

We rested 5 key players, which is too much. Emery simply didn't have the balls to approach this game how it should've been approached. He is a manager without cojones, and that hurts the team of course, and the fans especially. He is fearing that he cannot take advantage of a 2-0 lead against an out-of-form Valencia for the second leg... and had to rest 5 key players. What is even more illogical, the fact that not even a proper winger was fielded.

In my view, Bilbao were nothing special, and if the forces were equal tonight, who knows what could happen. It was evident that after Rakitic was fielded, we had at least 3-4 clear scoring chances, and converted one of them... everything changed dramatically. To make it even worse this night, as if fatigue and the dumb approach from Emery were not enough, the referee screwed Sevilla over and over with silly yellow cards, and then that pathetic red card... oh my God !

I'm not sure if Bilbao is the decent team to represent Spain in next year's CHL... I really doubt it, maybe Sociedad and Villarreal would still be more legitimate, but the table shows, Bilbao in 4th, and congratulations to them.

Again... fatigue, no luck, referee was against, wrong approach.... what more could a team need to lose a match ? Nothing !
