State of La Liga

Even without the Gerrard dive etc, the two matches overall were very balanced and even. Said a lot about the difference between the two leagues.

The EPL is more widely followed and thus perceived to be the stronger and better league, because more people speak English in the world than they speak Spanish, therefore there is a higher probability of people tuning in to matches with English commentators. English commentators will commentate matches hosted by English TV channels, and these channels prefer to buy the rights of English matches. Less people will tune in to watch Spanish matches because of the lack of English commentary. This leads to a greater following and a greater amount of purchased merchandise of English clubs, and so ultimately greater TV revenue, ticket sales and merchandise sales. Increased popularity means increased desire for companies to sponsor teams and the league, which is an additional source of money.

So the simplicity of the English language wins the financial and popularity race for the EPL. There will be more people arguing that it's a better league. It will also be richer because of the aforementioned reasons. The richer = the stronger players, so ideally the better league.
But La Liga isn't far behind, and if the league is to gain more strength it has to come from the Americas. Spanish speakers + the USA turning into a Spanish speaking country will definitely help. And so will GolTV, broadcasting in the English language to those Americans who due to Spanish cultural influences now follow football.

In the end, La Liga isn't far behind because of the massive pool of talent in the world. The 20 EPL clubs can't buy up all the talent, and then you also have a couple of rich clubs in Spain who have the same power. Of course financially it's impossible (at this rate) for Spanish clubs in general to catch up, but both Leagues have round about the same strength to offer. With the EPL edging it a bit (but certainly not in terms of technical football..)

And then once all that has been thought through, it's a subjective question - what type of football do you prefer?

Kanoute did nothing in the PL and Ronaldo is tearing through these La Liga defences.

So it works both ways.

I agree about Drogba, on form he is unstoppable.

Yeah Torres is shit.

He doesn't have to be shit to be worse than David Villa and Ibra, and at best on the same level as the likes of Kun, Forlan, etc. His record is far from impressive when you take away the likes of Hull City. He was Alessandro Gamberini's bitch today and while Gamberini is a good defender, he's not exactly the best Italy has to offer.

No shit it works both ways, see Kanoute and Forlan. Ronaldo has been no better than he was in the EPL. The difference is nobody claims Kanoute and Forlan are the best strikers in the world while Torres has the English language media swinging from his balls despite being vastly eclipsed by MaraVilla on the national level.

PL and La Iga are similar in terms of quality, Zlatan's record against top teams isn't that great either.

(I was about 10 feet away from him in the match at the swamp, he didn't do much that day except miss an open net. Has he ever scored against an English team btw? Not having a go, I just can't remember)

On another forum I actually defended Ibra's national team record by saying it's not much worse than Torres despite playing for a worse national team. El Niño is the better finisher probably but Ibra adds a lot more. Neither are as complete a striker as Villa.

Does Villa score headers?

I went to another rag game against Valencia (40 quid for a ticket.... piss take) he was pushed off the ball a lot. It was obv a freindly though.

villa scores a lot of headers but primarly prefers the ball on his feet.

I don't get what you mean, Jordan14 my maaaaaaaaan.

Look at Valencia-Sporting. That has a Valencia win written all over it beforehand. But it didn't turned out that way, just like that game for United and the other one for Chelsea. The other fact is that Chelsea won their other games this season, just like we did last year until we suddenly drew against Getafe at home. That had also Barcelona written all over it.
Sorry Gnegy-pooh, I completly missed this post.

Basically Ed said that he found the Premiership unpredictable due to the certain results that happen.

You responded with a a point that basically concentrated on the way the game unfolded and in analysing the game, the result became less unpredictable. However in truth, it loses it's unpredictability when you are watching the events unfold. With the evidence in front of you, it's simple to see why the lesser team is beating the bigger team.

Example. Ed looks at today's fixture of Manchester United vs Blue Bus FC. "Man Utd are going to win that easily" Ed says. 2 hours later Blue Bus FC have just beaten Man Utd 1-0. "Wow, what a totally unpredictable result!". Nothing more, nothing less.

Confused.com? I'm not fantastic at explaining things.
