State of La Liga

TV money breakdown in La Liga for the 2011/2012 season: Total funds: €657 million, RM & Barcelona get €135 million each (41% of total).

Of the remaining 59%, Atletico Madrid and Valencia receive €42 million each, plus €6m for stadium advertising (each 7% of the total).

Sevilla get €31m & Villarreal €28m (5% & 4%, respectively)

Worst off are clubs ambitious Malaga, who will receive just €14m and Racing Santander just €13m (each with 2% of total), ten times less than the big two

Personally, perhaps reducing the clubs in the Primera division down to 12-15 might be a good start but revenue sharing in terms of tv rights has to be reworked, IMO...Cannot be sustainable longterm

its more so the case for bringing barcelona and real down, not improving the state of the liga.

why? sevilla and villarreal are not going to earn more than they do because 5% and 4% is going to remain regardless. they are more annoyed with why barcelona and real earn so much. one thing that they are awfully failing to do is to improve their marketing to make foreign fans take a note of their team. i mean ffs, tottenham and aston villa (who havent won jack shit) are more famous than valencia, deportivo and at. madrid. people might say, "oh thats because they arent winning" but they had their time and they did nothing with it. heck even barcelona was pissing away marketing opportunities, only for laporta to come aboard and increase commercial revenues by 150% or 150m in mere 6-7 years. one could even say that reason why we have such a beautiful team and could hang on to such players is only due to our commercial stream.

last thing that the league will need is for barcelona and real madrid to chalk off 100m of their budgets by distributing it to those that havent tried to do so and losing many of their players because books will need to be balanced which would equate to atleast 3-4 top notch players leaving (to EPL because tv right there >>> tv rights here due to EPL's asian presence). this would only compound to fewer marketable players and reduce the chances of competing with EPL and attracting investment from abroad.

also, one of the major benefit of having real and barcelona in a lopsided league is that they get real and barcelona youth players/rejects on the cheap. just look at pedro leon for example or caceres. these players were bought for a ridiculously high price from la liga teams and essentially are free of charge. look at drenthe for example, hercules were doing so well with him in the team but they ruined everything by over-extending themselves.

thats a major problem with la liga teams, they never have tried to market themselves to lucrative foreign markets and then blame the ones who are doing it and call it foul play. pathetic.

when you lot are happy to watch levante play racing whilst barca versus bilbao has been neglected to be aired then the case has legs.

atm, people want to watch barca all over the world every week without fail. barca is the product that sells.

would it be fair to distribute money evenly and then show barca live 38 times and granada 5 times... anyone?

You can't have the Barca product without a viable league & opponents

In other words, you can't just stick Barca in a league with 19 other stooges...No one will want to see a pummeling of mediocre opponents for very long...A few matches, perhaps...But over & over?...I certainly wouldn't

Is it fair that people with a great income help pay for the health care of those that doesn't have the means or will to work? I think it is, a shitty comparisment I know, but like FCbarca said it's all about context.

People will get bored with such an unequal league and in i the end i think it will hurt barca more not to distribute the money evenly.

I must say, in terms of the level of debate and analysis, this is the best thread ever made.

One question and i'd like some answer

pick any of the following clubs :
Sporting Gijon,Osasuna,Villarreal,Seville,Atletico Madrid,Betis
give them 20 Million more on what they are earning and tell me what this will do to the competitiveness of la liga
If those 20 Million will make any of them compete with the current Real & Barca for honors i'm all for it...but please show me how it will

for me, it's not even about competitiveness anymore, but financial solvency.

but the thing is, even there, if you give these Presidents an extra 20m they'd still find a way to fuck it up.

they don't plan well enough, don't budget well enough, and don't market themselves well enough.

it's all so disorganised.

Fantastic question. I'm not sure if I an answer, but I'm going to take a stab. Everyone, please feel free to prove me wrong. I'm sure there are a lot of holes in my answers.

1) 20 million more for each team can help pay wages, which would be one reason to help keep good players in La Liga. I'm not sure how players view leagues and wages, but I'm sure clubs not being able to pay for players, would stain my opinion about joining certain leagues.

2) If not wages, it can bring in a decent players every year to help build better squads. I'm sure this answer is full of holes. Please fire away.

3) Perhaps an extra 20 mill can be added on top of already existing transfer funds to help bring in better players?

4) Clubs can save small increments of the money to put towards later use such as for renovating facilities, training grounds, better staff, youth academies, uniforms (?), special events to build moral, promotion tours and advertisements to spread awareness for the club, etc.

5) I also could be wrong here, but I'm guessing this is an extra 20 mill on top of the profit most clubs already make. This might help lift the burden of only affording 1-2 decent players a year towards 2-3 good players a year, building a better team faster. But maybe the extra funds can help clubs put money towards 2 different things a year, such as purchasing players and upgrading facilities. All in all, just building a better club faster. I assume for some clubs, if it can't be build fast enough, they could loose their opportunity for growth and sink..

Anyway, just some ideas. I'm open to hear what others have to say. I'm sure a lot of my ideas could be killed in one swift punch of a proper data.

Oh yeh, and to back-up my main thought, "every little bit counts". It's not just about this extra 20 mill a year or TV revenue. I think the overall argument is about finding many ways to boosts La Liga. The boost has to start from somewhere. TV revenue is only one gold mine. I think teams in La Liga are just finding every possible way to help finance their team enough that they can become more competitive, even invest that money back into something else that can generate more money. (which i guess it's the team, lol)

I don't think you can really say the other 18 clubs shouldn't get a fairer share because they would waste it. Especially with the way Barca and Madrid have squandered 10's upon millions on useless players.

+1000000

The biggest thing that separates Barca and Madrid from everyone else in La Liga is they get bailouts.

read all the previous conversation that we had. how is the 20m "extra" euros not going to increase the wage demands of a player and eventually, the whole team?

all of your suggestions are based off on fixed costs. and costs in football are never fixed because players and agents are greedy.
