State of La Liga

Málaga was seconds from going through to the semi-final too. And Bayern and Dortmund have been cruising to league victories recently. I've been watching a bit of Bundesliga during the last 2 years and the quality isn't better than La Liga by any means.

Especially that in the past few years Atletico and Seville both won it, and within the past ten years I remember Valencia also winning it.

TV Rights is one step but it is a small step once you realize the big picture. Although where finances are a concern, a fraction of a percent in interest always propagates into a larger problem. Sometimes clubs are 3-4 million short from financial balance. Every cent counts.

Better TV rights won't change the status quo of Madrid and Barcelona on top which is ultimately the driving reason 25 La liga players bounced (see Negredo's comments). They want to win a league title and they can do it in England/Italy/Germany/France, they won't win it in Spain. Having said that, Gotze bounced to Bayern anyway.

Bundesliga is as limited as La Liga. Even the Premier League has been dominated by Man U. France will go the same way now with PSG and Monaco dominating. Italy is probably the most open I guess. With the top players(Messi, Cristiano) playing in Spain and Spanish teams being the strongest in Europe over the last 15 years they should really be doing a better job with the overseas markets. Not speaking so much English though is a hamstring in this regard, and the slower pace of the game compared to the PL would be less appealing to a casual fan.

Several Spanish clubs had no English websites a while back. Which is the stupidest thing I have ever come across. It doesn't cost them anything, probably 100,000 euros a year to maintain it by hiring 1 English translator.

Better TV rights would help even it out on the behalf of the league, but the clubs need personal marketing to fund their own success or nothing will get better for them. No truly successful club relies on the amount of shares they get from league TV rights to be financially successful, they need better sponsors or endorsement deals as well as bigger public marketing.

The main goal should be to get more money to the league, not just more equally distributing the money that's already there. Increase the amount of domestic and foreign revenue with better advertising and a much wider marketing range. Smaller la liga clubs would improve a lot in the financial respect if they start playing friendlies in more commercial countries or getting sponsors that give them money and give them popularity. Clubs will only improve if they do so with personal gains, Atletico are on the right path for that right now.

Barcelona and Madrid are about the only thing that can save the league.

The EPL teams are not all marketed fantastically. That league has been built on the support in Asia/world wide for teams like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and latterly Chelsea.

Those teams have agreed to kick off times and tv deals that have helped the whole of the league grow in exposure and popularity.

Barcelona and Madrid need to agree to a more collective deal and be more open to kick off times etc, including Classicos.

Teams like Valencia and Sevilla can try to market themselves better but I dont think it will make a huge difference unless Barca and Madrid open up the markets to these teams in the first place.

Even the LaLiga official homepage isn´t still available in english...

Or maybe I´m blind and haven´t seen a language change option during the years? :D

May be taking my la liga obsession too far by listening to Fulham vs Betis friendly, but worth noting that Betis are playing them off the park.

Didn't do well in friendlies vs PL teams today + Cardiff City are signing Gary Medel for 13 million Euros, stupid how newly promoted PL sides can spend that much and have that much money compared to big Spanish teams.

The English teams are at home and their pre seasons are a week a couple of weeks ahead. Also the likes of Betis played their second string today.

I wouldnt worry about Medel going for 13m, its a good price for him and he is suspended too much and lacks discipline on the pitch. The rumour is that they will sign Ralf from Corinthians to replace Medel anyway.

The likes of Sevilla are selling players worth around 70m but actually improving their squad.

True, are they improving their squad though? Hard to replace Navas and Negredo.

Yes their squad has got better and Sevilla will finish higher than 9th this season.

They just have much more options than last season and have young players that are improving quickly.

It's a sad trend in La liga, everyone outside the top 2 have become feeder clubs.

A tv deal similar to the EPL would allow more teams to increase their wages and keep their big stars. 2 seasons in a row with 100 point league campaigns... how sad. Still love the league though.

In somewhat good news Valencia are making stadium progress. http://valenciacf.lasprovincias.es/noticias/2013-08-15/salvo-racionaliza-nuevo-estadio-20130815.html

Google translation:

One of the main priorities of the directive is to finish work on the new stadium, but not at any price. Amadeo Except wants streamline the project and forget about the early Pharaonic, but all without losing category. "Valencia is not going to spend 150 million to finish a whim, but something that is aesthetically beautiful, we will not squander so much money. Let's make the best stadium you have in Europe, five stars, at all levels, "he said.
Therefore, the President knows that some buildings should be modified to make them more affordable. "We're not doing 3,000 parking spaces would be absurd. To see how to get 3,000 cars there. We will not put glass on the facade (news advanced PROVINCES) because it would cost acclimate. And the same with 65,000 spectators enough, with possibility to extend the stands in the future, but that does not mean it's a beautiful stadium and emblematic "he said.
For the resumption of work the club needs an agreement with a company to invest in the business. Next month could close the deal with some of the companies that visited the stadium in early summer.
"There are companies interested in studying the model, and more that will come. So the 'due diligence' is one of the fundamentals for investors to know what guarantees have. The stadium is critical to valuing the 'brand Valencia'. But the investor is to earn money, to achieve a higher return than any fund and the need to find here, "said the leader.
In the same vein, Aurelio Martinez said: "The new stadium needs 150 million. If reactive, sponsors increase their investments. The next step, once resolved club viability of the audit is to seek an investor to finish the work. The Valencia in September to say who is the award. "

Basically they need 150 million to finish the stadium. They will save money by changing the original planned exterior and going with a temporary capacity of 65k with the option to expand in the future. Seems odd though as the top tier is already complete so all they really have to do is add seats there, perhaps there are other savings to be made with a smaller capacity. IMO they could just go ahead and finish it without the planned roof, plenty of stadiums including our own lack a roof. Anyway here is an image showing how they can tarp off the top section reducing the capacity to 65k

Here is the most baffling thing though, if everything goes to plan they should be finished by 2016/2017... yet they have gone and spent money on seats in the current stadium which seems a bit silly. Perhaps they are preparing for more delays.
