State of La Liga

Thank you very interesting read. It is true of all league's to an extent but La Liga, like the SPL the gap seem so big. For any side in a top league to make it big it is going to take large investment.

Not as big as Bundesliga gap.

You would have more of a point if Dortmund hadn't won the league the two years prior to this. Dortmund, Wolfsburg and Stuttgart all won the leage in last 10years.

Yes but subsequently Bayern bought 2 of Dortmund's best players, widening the gap hugely. Currently the Bundesliga gap is absolutely massive with Bayern really starting to click unlike recent years.

This year they were massively impressive but you can't base it on as short a time as one year. Dortmund have £70m in the bank alledgely from those transfers. They could bring in 4 or 5 players for that and strengthen their squad. AS I 've said I think new money is probably the only thing that will end the big club's dominance in all leagues. I suppose it is just a question of how much money in each league. In La Liga and EPL you need a sheikh. In the SPL a chippy owner would probably do

I hadn't seen this thread and was thinking of starting a "State of La Liga" thread. Anyway...

It's not looking good. It's actually really sad to see such a technical, organized, strategic, action packed league be so thin. The best players either go to Barcelona or RM and the rest who are looking to make what they're worth go abroad. It's amazing to win the league but as a Barcelona fan it's almost a must win because if we don't then RM will. I honestly wouldn't have a problem not winning the league every now and then if Valencia, Sevilla, Atletico, Malaga or Bilbao could have a phenomenal season. In recent times Valencia, Sevilla & Atletico have won trophies in Europe and a few domestically but the league escapes them. On top of that these teams have to sell their top players (Villa, Silva, Mata, Forlan) in order to avoid serious debt. Now it seems top players like Llorente, Jesus Navas & Negredo (West Ham over Sevilla? sad) are going to be moving away from Spain.

The modern game has become all about money. Those who have it make more and those who don't, well they just cant compete. The BPL has wide broadcasting and a lot of foreign investors among other reasons that have made it a cash cow. I know a big part of it is the economic problems in Spain which need to be fixed but something really should be done to balance out the league. Ideally it would be great if there were at least 4-5 teams competing for the league which is why I mentioned Malaga, Valencia, Atletico, and Sevilla who can make that next leap.

Any suggestions/comments?

Valencia had a chance, but their money is all tied up in the half built new stadium. The other clubs have lots of debt too. Barca and Madrid have strong finances and they are actually fairly well run, so I don't see the lesser teams competing without a big investor. In the long term it's possible, but it would have to be a consistent building process. Atletico have a chance maybe in 2 or 3 years if they can keep Simeone and use the Falcao money effectively. The others it would take 5-10 years I think.

The problem also is the game is international now. Champions League revenues make a difference and Barca and Madrid are making huge gains with more and more international money. That advantage is there every year.

Even as a Barca fan, I have to say that La Liga needs to divide the TV money equally.

As long as it remains this unbalanced, no other clubs besides Barca and (a lucky;)) Madrid, will ever win the league again.:(

Not unless Barca appoint Tony Pulis, and Madrid appoint Avram Grant as their coaches.:troll:

The idea of a European super league is beginning to make a lot of sense.

I agree, anything to help the league become a little more balanced. It's really sad to see all these players going abroad just because their clubs can't pay them what they're worth.

Yeah, I would honestly rather see a more balanced & competitive league, than Barca winning year after year with no challengers besides Madrid (when Atleti was closer it was more exciting, but they eventually fell too far behind to be a challenge all season long). To someone who only cares about Barca's trophy count they might enjoy this, but as a fan of football in general I feel something has to be done. Also, to me it feels better having won a title after a close battle, rather than by a landslide. Taking it down to the wire & coming out victorious is a wonderful feeling (ex. 2009/10 season when we won the league on the last day).

It's funny to watch Madrid fail because they're our rivals but the fact that them failing = no significant challenges to the team isn't all that great in the end.

Exactly, a Euro league would just make things worse than they already are. No thanks.

I still would say the gap between the Big Two and the rest in La Liga is even wider. Just look at how Atletico performed against Barca and RM. Barca even defeated them at home with a man down and which was basically a dead rubber for Barca. Yes, Atleti did beat RM in the CDR, but they were beaten twice in La Liga and even in the CDR, with the chances that RM had, they could have won comfortably on another day.

To be honest the gap between rich and poor in all the top leagues is growing and each league will become less competitive as a result, I can't see anyway at the moment how this will change, collective bargaining for things like TV rights are a good start but some clubs like united and bayern and making loads of money through commerical areas and leaving others way behind. To say that La Liga is just a two horse race is a bit cheap really as this pattern will develop throughout Europe, look at France with PSG and Monaco, England you can't look beyond United, City and Chelsea etc.

I wish the finances that qpr and aston villa have some of our teams could have the same cause they are surely not using it affectively. Imagine how strong some of our teams would be . What saddens me is that the epl have money but waste it so much on useless players like downing and carroll. Then comes the russian teams like zenit who do the same. If only spain had more investors. Sometimes I wonder why Amancio Ortega doesnt buy deportivo and make it a respectable club again.Atleast the malaga sheik tried and look what happened apart from the negative , they went to the quarter finals.
