If it happened with Robbie Keane at the other end you'd be chuckling about it and the media would be banging on about "irish eyes smiling" and how it was ever so slightly naughty.

No i wouldn't i would seriously feel disgusted about it and wouldn't condone it one bit..even if it meant getting to the world cup it wouldn't feel right and i wouldn't want to be at a world cup we had to cheat to get too!

I would celebrate if I got my team into the World Cup no matter how the goal came about. Nothing wrong with that, he can argue that he wasn't trying to deceive the officials. Horrible officiating though, that's no question - it was unfair indeed.

Also it wasn't THAT bad, I really don't think Henry was cheating. No player in the world is gonna start shouting to the ref "stop the play, i handballed it!!", Henry just played on, relying on the referee. Fair enough.

The fact that such behaviour is regular among footballers today doesnt make it anything better than it was - blattant cheating. It might be professional and according to his, his teams and his countries objectives, but its not in harmony with the true idea of sportsmanship.

absoposotively.

but coz it was a dirty frog who did the deed then it's a disgrace to football!

and you know I don't wanna bring up the race issue but when france were led by zizou (who despite being berber in origin has white skin) they cheated loads and no one seemed to care. they dove and time-wasted their way to the world-cup final itself (vieira's goal in the EF vs. spain came from a FK won by a dive, zizou's pens in the semi and final were from dives) and all you heard was how lovely and courageous they were and how zidane was a magnificent leader despite the fact that he only had one good game in the entire tournament (where he assisted henry to score from a FK that was incorrectly given as a FK).

but then maybe it's not a race issue.

maybe it's the fact that france never dicked over any teams from the british isles until now. portugal, meanwhile, who were perceived to have stolen a win from england (despite the fact that apart from lennon and hargreaves england were gash and stamping on someone's nutsack is always gonna get you sent off) were portrayed as the big villains of the piece in '06, despite their crimes being marginal or non-existent!

but back to the immediate topic: my attitude is that it's just the way she goes. you win some, you lose some. blame the officials for not spotting the cheating, and yes, cuss the player out for actually cheating... but don't let's pretend this was some serious offence against football that has tainted the cheater forever. like I said, how did people react when messi punched it in against espanyol?

desperate men do desperate things.

if they repeatedly cheat (e.g. deco and guti diving) then yes, they are forever tainted. but one act of foul play is simply one act of stupidity.

Anxiously waiting for the next match
and there is someone to be mad at it is the ref.... i would have done the same thing Henry did to get my country into the world cup, hell to win one single game even, it is the refs fault for missing a clear hand ball

i never have been an henry fan really but i do not blame him

i feel bad for Ireland however they are unlucky with that but to be honest Keane should have put the game away earlier anyways

It's not the ref's fault he had no chance of seeing that with the angle and all the bodies. The linesman should have picked it up as he had a clear view across.

meta i fundementally disagree 100%

robbie keane can't control a football at speed with the tools he is paid to use, to ask him to have two precision touches with his arm then cross perfectly is out of the question because the two things are complete impossibilities.

It's really nothing to do with race Meta. The France 98 team were actually good. This team have been appalling led by a total twat of a manager and a very poor leader on the field. The characters of Zidane and Henry are polar opposites. That's the key difference here. Not skin colour.

The fact is the British mentality is to support the underdog, and seen as this was the Irish (well liked by everyone in the UK tbh) it hits people harder. France were poor over the two legs and Ireland deserved to go through. If Keane hadn't bottled his chance we wouldn't be having this convo. On their own turf France didn't turn up and got through via a piece of cheating.
