Failure of adaption outside Germany Tren in recent history , Huth failed , Ballack made it , Metzelder didn't
I know the old generations played really well outside Germany but i noticed in recent years that was not the case (or so i think feel free to correct me if i'm wrong man)
Now i get it, but i dont fully agree, as those examples are a bit debatable.
- Huth actually didnt make the move as a pro (he went to england at the age of 15 or 16).
- Metzelder was already semi-finished and very injury prone (he pulled that strong WC 2006 performance out of nowhere actually) ... if Schuster wasnt coach and Metze wasnt for free, he wouldnt have gone to RM. ANd you clearly have to factor that in for your evaluation. ALso idont remember that Dortmund felt that he was a huge loss ...
- Another good example of someone who didnt make it was David Odonkor ... Dortmund is still laughing over Betis paying 5-6M for a player, that was brought to the WC 2006 for a single tactical task and who was hardly usable for anything else.
The thing is that we hardly had a german player (in the past decade) at his peak and with a certain stardom moving to a foreign club. No Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Klose, Podolski, Frings, Mertesacker, Kahn etc. did it. It was mainly Ballack and Lehmann, and both did rather well. Although i never felt like Ballack was a major hit at Chelsea ... maybe solid but no key player.
