Transfers and Rumours - old thread

I wouldn't say Puyol's finished, but we definitely shouldn't rely on him any more. He can be a great third choice CB for us next season though.

Anyways, we did need a CB last summer IMO, since Puyol was 34 and Masch is not a CB. We just need one even more now.

Yeah I agree.Puyol should be saved for only clasicos and big matches next season.

By the way, anyone know what the price could be for Vertonghen? He is our best cb option IMO.

Inexperienced too? there is just 2 years difference between the 2 anyway
And btw ,VV became regular starter in 2003-2004 season at the age of 21 ,same age of Ter Stegan if he moved to us
Actually I don't mind Inexperienced GK if he is really good

Thing is, ter Stegen does not know how to play the Barca-way and would need time to settle in.

Contrary to ter Stegen, de Gea has CL-experience and has played at a higher level than ter Stegen.

Actually, I think Puyol should be our third choice CB, the guy we use to rest Pique and the new CB. If something were to happen to one of them though, I certainly wouldn't mind using Puyol in a big game.

This current injury most likely won't set Puyol back any more than his arm injury or knee injury in 2012 did. He's no more "finished" than he was at the beginning of the season. This latest surgery was less invasive than the one he had before the EC. This is not "another nail in the coffin" of his career. When he comes back, he'll be exactly the same Puyol he was earlier this season - an irreplaceable part of the team, a leader, a boss in the defense whose effort will usually cover for any of his physical setbacks or occasional mistakes. Don't be quick to discard him. Yes, we desperately need another CB, because we need the depth. Not because Puyol can no longer be relied on.

Thing about Puyol is that he's injured every other week and seems way slower these days. Sad because he was one of the best Spanish CB's of the last 20 years (with Hierro, Sergio Ramos).

He'd be a great third choice CB, but IMO we need to get someone else to be the starter.

Barça didn't "badly need a CB" last summer. Pique, Puyol, Mascherano + Muniesa, Bartra. Muniesa got injured and Puyol is now more or less finished...

Song was signed (1) to replace Keita, (2) to backup Busquets and (3) to play the "odd" CB game.
Disagree. Puyol has been having problems for a while, it was clear he would have them again. Muniesa is also injury prone, and Bartra is still not on the level required, leaving Pique and Masch. A 3rd wc cb has been needed for 2 seasons. It was stubborness not to get one last summer.

Because it's the part of the team suffering since Abidal got sick, and Puyol had a serious injury. Masch came to the rescue in 10/11, but it's not enough. Pep should already had brought a cb the next season, but he didn't. Then Tito should had, but didn't as well. And the problem got bigger and bigger, to the point it is now. How many wc cbs Barça has? I'd say 2, puyol and pique(questionable). It's not enough if you want to aim the treble every season.

Wasting money on an unnecessary transfer like Song and disregarding the obvious defense problem. I'm sorry but as good as Song has been, we didn't have an impending need for a DM backup (Masch could even have fulfilled that role if we had gotten a CB).

I guess my question should really be why were Barça so "stubborn" as to not buy a CB last summer? If the club knew they needed a CB why not buy one?

I think the club actually genuinely started to believe that playing midfielders as centre backs was going to revolutionise world football.
