It does seem like the club are going to try and get Hummels but I just have a feeling that we'll end up getting Inigo Martinez also or instead. It will be a much easier signing to make that I reckon could be completed very shortly after the season ends without much talk in the press before hand, kind of like the Jordi Alba transfer last summer.

A selling club always wants more from a so-called rich club; plus, they're not averse to leaking the bid in order to start a bidding war.

The thing is that most of the people who eventually buy his shirt would have bought a shirt from another player if he wasn't there, so it's hard to measure the commercial aspect.

Thats not the case at all. The club will be looking to break into new markets ie Brazil/South America.

Do you not think clubs would have realised by if shirt sales etc were not affected by big name signings. The facts is they are, even at clubs that are already full of stars to begin with.

Yes, but they'd probably sell just as much by buying Honda, Suarez or a mexican player. What you really want isn't mainly shirt sales but a following, so you should focus on getting a star from a country where you have relatively few fans. If you're lucky a few of the fans of the player stay even when he leaves.

Not they wouldnt, just look at how much those players are worth from their sponsorship deals at the moment. That will show you the commercial power they have.

Anyway that is not the main reason he is signing, it is because he is one of the best young players in the world.
