If a player already has hit world class level as a back it feels awkward to make a transition to another position. There aren't many wc backs around anyway, and most likely it wouldn't be of benefit to the team nor the player (output-level). But the desire to play more centrally with more responsibility, higher dynamic and more unpredictable environment I totally get. Midfield is the coolest position in football imo.
Hope Arnold would stay as a back. He is such a cool young man, and as a back he has the best option to make most out of his career. Great backs can be counted on two hands and the creme de la Creme the last 30 years... Cafu, Lahm, Carlos, Marcelo, Alves. And then there are guys like Maicon, Zanetti and Cole who are tier lower. He has the talent to get up to peak in stead being just another good to WC midfielder.
