Beast has it spot on. He didnt prove to Pep, whether in training or in matches, that he could improve or play well, therefore he didnt play. Simple, and thats what happens in football......it can hardly be called unfair. If he played shit its down to him to change that, and he didnt. An absolute waste of money

simple. Barca had no time to let him fuck up in our treble season.
Chyggie isnt better. It's a different kind of player.

We could use some speed in the back though

As a footballer you need minutes to get sharper and improve your confidence. Caceres never got that. You could see he had excellent tackling ability and ridiculous pace. That is a great foundation to work with, but we didn't go with. Maybe he isn't good enough for Barca, but when you don't give him opportunities and test him out then you won't know. Felt sorry for him tbh the way he just never played.

I'd go with Cal. His qualities could 've greatly complimented Piqué. He wasn't the best at positioning, but he could 've improved that with more playing time & experience.
A player like him needs his manager's confidence & encouragement. I'm sure with a bit more patience, he would 've turned in to a good player for us.
His performances for his National team have been solid so far.(exc the Arg game) So, i dont know how ppl can just say he is crap. He is 22y.o & he can definitely improve on his weaknesses.
Watch his performance against Recreativo(?) at home when he was paired alongside Marquez. He was fantastic, much better than what Chyg has shown so far(defensively) even after having played more mins than Martin did at his time here.

Caceres wasn't good enough. Mind you we've bought a £25 million tractor so maybe Cacares was treated unfairly.

beast is right.

the fact that caceres simply did not get minutes (when everyone did, even the woeful gleb and sanchez) means he really must have had some serious flaws in his game that pep saw in training. you and I, dear readers, do not see him every day in training.

chysus is taking his time to adapt. but considering he's coming from the motherfucking ukraine and a defensive minded team at that I'd expect you guys would have more patience with him. it's not easy playing in defence for us, even piqué took about this long to get really awesome (honestly, some of you lot are SO fickle).

but this debate just sums up the mentality of some football fans:

they see a player with great physical attributes and think "great, we can build on that!"

but pep sees a player with great technical attributes and thinks "great, we can build on that!"

chysus has immortal technique, fantastic vision, a good reading of the game, and confidence in his abilities. his sole incorrectable weakness is that he's not very fast. and even that will be less of an issue once he gets used to the pace of our play as he'll stop getting caught flat-footed. he can be a bit aloof at times but again, he's adapting to the pace of the league.

this is barcelona. technique comes first.

I look at chysus and I see a taller non-latin marquez. their playing styles are remarkably similar.

I feel that's the kind of level he'll end up at. and piqué/chysus could replicate the sheer win of piqué/rafa from last season. and with more tigrish CB's coming through like muniesa, things are looking good.

when playing in europe against teams at their level or higher, they generally adopt a defensive scheme and counterattack with their brazilian contingent and srna.

and considering the level of the ukranian league, most of chysus' top-level experience came in europe.

The problem is do we really have time to waste waiting for Chiggy to adapt? We play him and he fucks up, I agree with you that theres potential there but its been four months and he's been terrible....everytime we've played him he's looked shaky, how many chances are we meant to give the guy to ruin our season??

he looks shaky every time? um... no.

ruin our season? how many points have we dropped because of a chysus mistake? you'll find it's a big fat 0. he was only really poor against atleti.

pep has managed his game-time well, keeping him active and fit but not exposing him to anything too risky. he will continue to improve with time.

adapting to a new country, culture and language AS WELL AS a lightyears difference in footballing level and intensity is going to take more than four months ffs.

so impatient.

In all fairness what you brand impatient I call generous, we payed £25 million for the guy, we should damn well expect him to get it together within 4 months.

Henry took a year to settle at Barça, the great Dennis Bergkamp took around 5 or 6 months to find his feet at Arsenal, we need to be patient.

It might sound like ridiculous reasoning but imo you can afford to be more patient with a striker. He might have missed chances and shizzle, but he didnt make mistakes that led to the other team scoring. The way Chiggy is going something on that level will happen........plus he's never going to be the Bergkamp of the Barca defence.

not if you have a modicum of sense.

We established a long time ago I aint got much of that, :D
