How many matches will the finalists (for example) play? every stat will be different with more countries...

Not decided yet. There's the 12 group 4 team format, and the 16 group 3 team one.

48 teams out of which 32 qualify for the knockouts I guess, meaning round of 16, then 1/8, 1/4, 1/2...

Overall it makes 8-9 games for the finalists.

12 groups of 4 teams is a MUCH better format than the 3 teams garbage.

So many third places advancing kinda kills the group stage too. EUROs group stages became a chore after that. 32 is the ideal formula. Or 64 for that matter but I don't think the level of football worldwide is high enough for 64 teams yet.

Without quality teams it's a parody of football. Last Euro's proved it with some teams that had no place there.

Level of football is highest it's ever been and will only get better. Far more passenger nations participated in WC and EUROs in the past

Football is closer to equilibrium, yes. Because Western Europe produces all those talents for Africa NT.

Asia expanding to 3 more teams doesn't make sense at all. China is declining in football, India is decades back in the sport. All we have left are Iraq and Uzbekistan probably.

Reportedly 15 million households in US have watched the final.

Gianni Infantino should make a SuperBowl type of annual World Cup to milk the market. I'm joking. Hope he's removed from general secretary. The guy has no respect for football traditions, proposing WC every 3 years, expanding the tournament to 48 teams. At first some may applaud this but looking at the details, this is pure marketing:

- Football in UEFA zone is king and has only 3 teams increase from 13 to 16. 15 teams were in 1998 France, right? So absolutely irrelevant.
- New Zealand have already qualified from OFC zone for the 2026 World Cup in USA. Unless we need Tonga to break the record for goals conceded in WC history. Oleg Salenko would love to play in such game.
- Africa and Asia have almost double the spots for 2026 WC. You know no need to address the elephant in the room when it comes to football in Asia.
- North America have 3 hosts, so they gave additional 3 slots to teams like Costa Rica, Panama to compete for.

Europe has the 2nd least population in the world, while almost 2 of every 3 human beings are Asian. And like 1 of every 6 being African.
You are gullible if you think Europe should be getting more, as the World Cup is about money and increasing popularity of the game, you don't do that by giving the small contents more when you already have their market at peak.

International football was on decline before in comparison to CL, but past few years it is on the rise again, as it iffers unique experience in comparison to other sports. Euro finals had more viewrs than any NBA final games that was played during same time. The idea of Nations passionately clashing in 1 game just have too much hype and it is normal that they want to use it more.

Not sure why not respecting football tradition is bad? If anything it is his best quality.
And so far Infantino seems doing fine and popular everywhere outside of Europe, which is weird considered UEFA was the one who made him president

The three team idea has apparently unofficially ( for now) been knocked on the head as it would mean that the final group games would be played at different times as there would be one team watching the other two each time and the very last two teams to play would know exactly what score / result would be needed each time

A lot of people have been avoiding to explain their takes before the final, semifinal, quarterfinal or even the world cup.
Some questions will never been answered.
I bet you he would say busquets is better then Enzo.

Finalists would still play 7 games each (would be 8 with 12x4 format) but overall number of games would increase from 64 to 80 (with proposed 3 teams groups). More games, more money. And we all know the only thing corrupted FIFA cares about is €€€/$$$.

If we want to make it more interesting should be just winners and four best 2nd placed teams would qualify to Last 16 Round. But ofc this drastically decreases number of games (basically eliminating a full round of KO games) which is not something they want.

A format where top 2 teams from each group and 8 best 3rd placed go to next round would make 70-80% of group stage games basically irrelevant. Again though, they won't care as much as folk would watch the games and fill FIFA pockets.
