They were extremely similar in some ways, but complete opposites in others. The similarities is in the smooth technique and in the spatial and temporal awareness.
Perhaps you can make the point that a player able to play in this "controlled" way while at the same time regularly be decisive with crazy dribbles and creative assists etc (like Iniesta) is more unique than someone who barely controls the game by keeping the ball at all times and play the correct, safe pass 999/1000 times (like Xavi). But I feel, as someone already pointed out, that you could replace Iniesta with Silva without noticing much difference, but if Xavi was to be replaced (by whom?) the entire team would almost fall apart.
I felt Xavi went on the field just to prove that the easy solution is enough, that you do not need to look for the decisive action all the time (like Magnus Carlsen said about Bobby Fisher - he proved that 'easy' chess is enough). He was an extremist, and influenced not only his team but the entire footballing world as soon as he got the chance to play his way to the fullest. Of course he was extremely gifted, but as I have written a lot of times here, it was only after the year he turned 28 anyone ever thought about him entering into some GOAT discussion. Iniesta was probably more gifted, but less ideological and less unique, more of an artist kind of player the likes we've seen a lot of. Xavi was lucky to finally get permission to play his type of way fully, Iniesta was lucky to be in the same team as Xavi all the time.

Did this jabroni just say Iniesta was lucky to be in the same team as XAVI?

What a way to lose all credibility.

I preferred Xavi, but they're two of my favourite players of all time and I don't wanna pick one over the other, so I will not vote.

The way Xavi controlled games under Pep and Del Bosque was just unreal though. There was a four or five year period where, if Xavi was playing, the other team KNEW they couldn't cope with the Barca or Spain midfield and willingly conceded possession and played on the edge of their own box. Yes other players played a part in that too, but Xavi was such a metronomic presence with his constant pass and move, ability to find the correct positions, ability on the half-turn and propensity for opening up space with one body feint or movement. The same applies to Iniesta too. These things won't show up in the stats but they're very important in opening up a team.

Busquets was brilliant too (though declined in later years) but Xavi and Iniesta were just sensational. Modric I feel is the only one who can compete with them from their generation. Kroos and Pirlo were absolutely fantastic (Kroos is a lot younger than the rest) but I believe Xavi, Modric and Iniesta are the three best midfielders since Zidane.

Different styles, but Iniesta will always be my dude - he just looked so effortless.

When Iniesta was in mood it was impossible to lose, guy played so easy and at the same time so effective. If he would have kept his 14/15 form MSN would have had an easier life in 2016 and 2017.

Yeah sure “chess player”, “main man” and “conductor” was fighting for minutes with Van Bomel, Thiago Motta and Edmilson and couldnt be even compared to Deco before turning 28 and Pep paired him with Busquets. Busquets who was best DM itw from his second season until his last. And now Barca are six months without him, playing like shit. When xavi was reserve at 33 - Barca won the treble 😀
Don’t Forget Xavi Got An ACL Midway Through 2005-06, So I Don’t Understand The Fighting For Minutes Point. Point Is Xavi Was A Great Midfielder Pre Pep But Don’t Forget For The First Few Years (1998-2003) He Was Being Played Defensive Midfielder When He Wasn’t In His Best Position, As Soon As He Changed Positions He Transcended His Game And Became The Main Figurehead Of Barça Style Of Play. As Soon As He Declined, Barça And Spain Declined….
