Zidane overall for career and being a football genius, but Ronaldinho was arguably even more outrageously gifted, just didn't shine long enough. But at this level of extreme football ability i.e. both 9.9/10, talent becomes a less important thing and the determining factor becomes more about who had the better career. So Zidane.

Zidane thus wins this for me but Ronaldinho was also one of the biggest geniuses ever.

As King Leo said, Zidane is probably in the top 10-15/20 range overall, and Ronaldinho would be in there on talent, top 10 on talent, but not on body of work.
I'd argue Zidane is just as gifted and magical. Dinho does a wider array of tricks but Zidane also has a lot of tricks. Both did outrageous things with the ball. Zidane has a different level of elegance matched only by the likes of Bergkamp I guess. He was so smooth and natural on the ball.

Yeah likely right. Zidane is elegance personified. They're obviously both absolute geniuses as I said so any difference in talent is negligible and a matter of opinion.

He reminds me of Federer although I firmly believe Roger is an even bigger genius.

The reason is that Zizou has the grace of a ballet dancer just like Roger. Poetry in motion.

I'm a die hard fan. My first account here was named RF20.

Are you a tennis fan? It is my favourite sport.
I am a tennis fan in the sense that I think it is an amazing sport. However the only sport I felt compelled to watch for a long time was football.

That is changing though. I wanna watch more tennis in future (though I missed the best era, don't think Alcaraz, Sinner etc can replicate it). But I like other sports even more. I wanna try watching futsal (the World Cup was just on), volleyball and handball also look excellent, and I love competitive swimming too. However, my favourite second sport would be athletics/track and field. I normally just watch the Olympics but this time I told myself I would keep up with the season too i.e. generally the Diamond League and the World Championships, and I did watch the Diamond League following the Olympics. I know a good amount of the names and faces on the scene now.

I do regret not seeing the big 3 (plus Murray) era of tennis, though. My brother loves tennis (and football) but his favourite is Djokovic. He also really likes Messi too. I always thought Djoko was more like Ronaldo and Federer more like Messi - in terms of style of play I mean, not personality.

I watched Wimbledon all the time in the 90s. I also watched a great video of Del Potro forehand winners recently. He must have one of the best forehands in the game.

Disagree with this comparison.

Federer is elegance and flair personified. Messi is nothing of that sort. Messi creates magic but not in the same way. He's more about efficiency and consistently doing the same things to a very high level in a simplistic manner. Messi has zero swagger, grace or elegance in the way he moves. That is a salient feature of RF's game. Federer is a total showman.

Messi is similar to Djokovic in that they are both complete players who do unreal things in a simple way with one weakness(relatively speaking): Headers/Aerial game and Overhead/Smash.

Nadal is similar to Ronaldo. Both freak athletes with tremendous power in their shots/groundstrokes and less finesse.

I'm really struggling to think of a Football comparison for Federer. Maybe a mixture of Zidane(elegance) and Dinho(flair), but then he also had GOAT level longevity and efficiency which Dinho and Zidane lacked.

Fair enough. Those are all very intelligent points. Only thing I would respectfully MAYBE disagree with is the idea that Messi isn't graceful or elegant. I can see why someone would hold that opinion as he's a lot muscle memory too, but he makes it look effortless to me. In a different way to Fed though, yeah. It's interesting how two people can agree on several things but see something like that a little differently.

I am not overlooking that you might be right and I might be wrong, though.

Interesting debate. We shouldn't take thread off-topic though, so if you wanna continue it quote these posts in tennis thread and we can talk there. Not right now though as I am heading offline to do other stuff.

Del Potro had the most powerful forehand on tour. His forehand was so big that you couldn't get near it.

Unfortunately, injuries ruined the big man and his father fucked him over financially.

Very likeable guy.

His dribbling looks effortless because he's so fucking good at it but his movement/running style isn't easy on the eye. It's like a lil hamster.

He doesn't glide across the pitch like Kaka, Henry, Iniesta, Zidane, etc if you know what I mean. There's a certain inimitable grace in Federer's footwork where he just floats on the Tennis court and dances his way to victory.

Even Maradona is closer to Federer than Messi in that aspect.

I get what you mean - he is called the atomic flea. He moves with quick little legs. I get what you mean that he doesn't glide. I can definitely see the difference in his dribbling style to the players you mention. They all seem like they're moving like a tornado is behind them, with large strides. It's hard to put into words but you know what I mean - the best word you used is float.

I once used the word 'weave' to describe Messi's dribbling style and company of cules liked it. I think that's a fair way to describe him - he darts in and out of players like an assassin.

Yes. Messi is constantly cutting in and out and changing directions while dribbling while Federer floats around smoothly and makes the movement and the groundstroke look like one fluid motion.

David Ferrer is one guy in tennis who changes directions very quickly. Very underrated because of how boring his playing style is!

I have heard of him, will check him out.

Going offline now to watch this game, tidy, then sleep. Look out for reviews of three or four films watched today from me tomorrow (though likely nothing you are interested in: Red One and two Paddington films). Goodnight m8.

Ronaldinho didn't have longevity but in his prime he was very consistent, much more than Zidane who was not even consistent in his prime. There were reasons why Dinho came and helped Barca conquer Liga more than Zidane ever did with Madrid.

Zidane isn't in top 10-15 player ever when the likes of Xavi, Iniesta or Modric surpassed him already when it comes to overall career.

Zidane's overall ranking is higher than Dinho but prime Dinho completely blows Zidane's out of water.
