1 - Victor Valdes

He started his career with horrendous mistakes like the one on this game, then he became instrumental to our success, being among the top 3 goalkeepers imho for 2-3 years. The worrying situation is that he is showing those same hard to explain mistakes more and mor. Noe often, in big games especially. He should work more definitely, he has been too laid back since last season

He should try keeping things simple - he's overdoing it, perhaps its over confidence and a lack of ambition but he's still very good most of the time...but the mistakes have become too common again, whereas from about 2006 until last year they've been overstated (except when he played against David Villa, where he'd always get destroyed)

yeah he was Villa's bitch, bet he still is in trainings
i guess it's just a problem of concentration, he still preserves those inmense qualities with the feet and one on one situations. Sadly for a goalkeeper one second of distraction takes the whole job to the drain. Tito needs to work on his confidence

Its just a lapsE in concentration. It happens but like you guys said they cost dearly. Anyway Valdes is far from over but hopefully dithin the next few years he will get an able deputy.

Just needs to kick it out but I guess in training they demand him to maintain possession. Got a bit too cheeky there though. Really don't want to see the Valdes of 2007...

All the three CL finals we've won during this millennia then? He's been superb

How was he superb vs Man United in 2011? They had one shot at goal and that was offside.

Although I agree many people are going excessively apeshit now because of that terrible mistake. But that's football for many people, you're only as good as your last game. Never been a great fan of Valdes but he's definitely top 5 in the world, Casillas will for me though be the #1 keeper.

stupid idiot with his howler again... But wasn't that a foul by di Maria!?

Valdes does them only once or twice a year, hopefully he has had his share already and won't do such silly things again this season

Victor Valdes is a good keeper because he's decent with the ball at his feet? He's a good keeper because he makes occasional good stops? Guess what? The point of being a good keeper is you consistently stop shots and prevent teams from scoring. Every half-decent keeper will have a few nice saves.

The guy needs to consistently save shots. That's his job. He needs to hand the ball assuredly and make sure that balls are not given away cheaply, especially not in key games. The guy has given the ball away to RM in two straight seasons now, both led to goals. The guy managed all of 1 save in 4 shots on goal against Chelsea, at home in the CL's semifinals. You're going to need better production out of your goalkeeper in order to win, regardless of how well he plays the ball with his feet.

The three goals against he let in cannot be blamed for him though. He could possibly have done a bit better with the goal at bridge as I recall it but you can hardly blame him for the 2 goals at camp nou. Ramires goal was brilliant and Torres was completely 1vs1 with him.

I think last season his level considerably dropped, the 3 seasons prior to that he had been fantastic (better than Iker imo), Hopefully he can refind his form this season, he just needs to cut out silly mistakes like that.

As for talk about him letting too many in and not saving enough, hasn't he had the best shot save ratio for like the last 2 or 3 seasons?

the lack of understanding my some one here is just

I actually find it funny how some people pretend to sit on a high horse and write short sentences, trying to be witty, pertaining to others opinions. Very cool, bro/s.

And I don't know what sort of "factual" means of judging Valdes you need? I'm writing about Valdez after watching him closely, almost every game, for the past 5 seasons. I value watching the games above any sort of statistics.

Like I stated, he is weak on corners and freekicks. He often fails to even make contact with the ball when coming out of the box to claim the ball. When you play for a team that usually has around 70 percent possession and is probably most vulnerable vs dead-ball situations....how does that make sense to have your goalie subpar in that situation? How exactly does that make him a "perfect" fit for this team?

It also comes as no surprise that last season when our defense was less than spectacular.....Valdes suddenly seems to be "in bad form". He's not in bad form, he just didn't have one of the best defenses in the world covering his back and cleaning up his mistakes. A good goalie shines when his defense isn't that great, that what makes him stand out.

Valdes, to me, has never stood out. He just looks great when the team is looking great, and looks average when the team is playing sub-spectacular....plus he makes stupid mistakes.

The fact that people say he's a great keeper b/c he's good with his feet is just laughable.

Valdes makes great saves... He been instrumental when Pep's team was in full flow. We should not take the credit away from him when he's having a bad time.

It would be stupid to say he looks good because the team in front of him is good... When the fact is he saved our team a lot many times than he is given credit for.

People said the same thing about Pique... He's a United reject. He looks good because he has Xaviniesta keeping posession thereby preventing the opponents from coming onto him. Until he started pocketing CR7 people didn't shut up at all. It's been same with Abi three years ago. They say the same about Busi, Pedro. And Valdes too. It is funny actually

so much wrong. a goodkeeper is one that shines when thier defense isnt great, well since every good keeper in the history of football has had a good defense infront of them. thier as never been a good keeper in history.
as it relates to his play on set pieces check how many goals he has conceded on them compared to one of those good keeper. that plays behind a poor defense

it's funny actually... We have conceded less number of goals from set pieces than we were expected to, by far.

Even last season Valdes, save his silly sausage mistakes, was still statistically better than Casillas. It's one thing to laugh off statistics, it is another thing to elaborate on them and then looking at it with a better perspective
