1 - Victor Valdes

I would like to present an official motion to change his nickname to St. Nick. cuz yo, he was prescient to understand Madrid would need a gift in order to have any chance in that match.

and he recovered very well. Rather than going to pieces like a normal goalie would, he still kept his "sweeper"-like role going throughout the game.

Valdes is not as talented as Casillas. But he's made less mistakes (even including the couple of absolute howlers last night) over the past 3-4 years than Iker. So I'll happily take VV over him. He's tailor made for Barcelona.

The patience and encouragement he was afforded by virtue of being a catalan & la masia grad, despite his past failings, some even hard to forgive, has helped him grow and achieve consistency over the years. I would say Casillas or any other top goalie in his place, given the same backing and longevity, would've just adapted their game and gone on to be as good if not better for us.

Anyway,

C.ronaldo and Valdes, for me, were the duds from last night. Had we gone on to lose the game, people here wouldn't 've been as forgiving. Did his mistakes not remind you all of his old self? His distribution having improved, still continues to be one of his weak areas. The whole idea of ball retention is a fair point. But the goalkeeper needs to identify the ideal moments to pass the ball to his defense and moments where he needs to boot the ball forward. A balancing act if u will. The gk's desire to play tiki-taka with the defense when the opposition is pressing so high and narrowing the spaces is inviting danger, even looks a bit silly at times. I'd rather lose possession than concede a goal. While i understand we build from the back and VV does well for the most part, i wish he was a bit more calculative when put on the ball. The lapses of concentration needs to be curbed as well.

Yeah, Victor blew 2 key passes...One that led to the early goal and a second that was fortunate not to...but amazing how he continued to still pass it out of the pack as calm & cool as if they hadn't happened

Cajones, big time

He's not in good form for a few weeks now. Remember the ball against Getafe he just let go out which led to the corner kick goal at the end? Both goals that he conceded in San Siro were rather soft as well. Didn't look that secure lately.

oh really? is that what you really want? he has been our best passer for the last 3 years. it's hard to remember any other mistakes besides those in that game and all of a sudden people are like angry dogs around him. what about those 1000 of times when he didn't just gave the ball away and kept the possession? we have scored so many goals thats started with valdes. so if we take those 1000 times lets say he hoofs 700 of them, we probably lost 600 f them in midfield because our lack of height. we gave opposition the ball and they score 10 of them. it's much worse than one goal. you just got to think a few steps ahead. it's so easy to blame him because it's so obvious. i belive that a good feet goalkeeper is the most important player in our system.

those goals would have never happen if he'd hoofed the ball

look at pep 0:50 at the sideline
8:18
1:20

there are probably pleny of more goals.

i think you were over exaggerated - one mistakes and lets forget all our philosophy. reading some of the comments here just makes me sick. thank god valdes isn't mentally as weak as most of the forum here, otherwise he would have totally lost the game, but he was like a boss and kept his philosophy.

:valdes: and fuck everybody else.

I love Valdes to death, but in all honestly I still believe Iker is a better and more talented goalkeeper...

and yes that was my opinion before the game as well...

His mistake yesterday was his first since God knows how long, even Iker had a howler not too long ago, it just happened in the worst possible game...

I think Valdes showed huge mental quality yesterday. I am sure every goalkeeper would by than just shot the ball 60 yards but he showed that, in La Masia, even GK has to be prepared for something like this and believe in system and himself.

his confidence in the passing attack sums us up. our faith in the system and the way of playing is why we're so good. we have total faith in it. we don't get scared and abandon our philosophy. we keep going and going, and usually we prevail.

like you say... even the goalkeeper, even under massive pressure as he was in the Bernabeu, should believe in the system. Pep singling him out for praise just goes to show how much he values that belief.

Valdes and Casillas probably make the same amount of big mistakes a season. It used to be what separated them, but that was long ago. Casillas is still the more talented shot stopper, he's just insane at protecting his net, but Valdes is more well rounded, better at organizing his defense and is far superior with the ball at his feet and at distribution (though he can overdo it).

maybe his natural position is further up the pitch, DM maybe?
