I think Messi did enough for this club for us Cules to not question his personal awards. Even if you feel that way, you don't have to voice that minority opinion of yours in public. You can't change what has been done so better deal with it and move on.

Ursegor,
Very interesting argument.....

Lets get real here, 1- Iniesta in 2009 was excellent
2- Messi in 2009 compared to 2011 "STAT WISE" = less attractive
Yes indeed.

But Messi created his "star" figure and name basically out of how great of a Footballer he was, your talking about Pep shining his star player as if theres some kind of political propaganda, lets be fair... the kid had earned his Stardom by then he had already wowed the masses with Hattricking Madrid, Goal of a century against Getafi...etc

Love both players, but 2009.. hard to count the times Messi was wowing my friends and me or Family... putting aside stats for a moment as "no80s" put it, its all about the Magic.

Quoting SAF is great but what about the other Zounds of Football specialists that year ? Just as the award itself which holds perfect transparency to the public not some FIFA conspiracy award as some people ignorantly still think. Coaches, Captains and Journalists all over the globe.

Who wouldnt want to see Iniesta win this award at some point but Messi totally deserves this recognition at the moment.

I already wrote something about the Ballon d'Or in another thread. I'll just quote myself:

Impossible for someone like Iniesta to win. The "minor footballing/non-footballing nations" are making a joke out of the whole award.

Algeria: 1. Messi 2. Ronaldo 3. Thomas Müller (Thomas Müller the third best footballer in the world, REALLY?!)
Andorra: 1. Messi 2. Dani Alves 3. Xavi (Alves the second best footballer in the world, REALLY REALLY?!)
British Virgin Islands: 1. Fabregas 2. Messi 3. Ronaldo :)lol:)
Burundi: 1. Neymar 2. Abidal 3. Benzema (What in the ...?!)
New Zealand: 1. Agüero 2. Xabi Alonso 3. Rooney (...)
Tonga: 1. Dani Alves 2. Agüero 3. Rooney (...)

etc.

I wouldn't allow non-relevant football countries to vote. Appoint experts from Germany, Italy, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay etc. and get it done with. What's the point in letting Djibouti vote for Benzema as the best player in the world?

I expect Agüero to finish in the top 5 in the Ballon d'Or votings this season because of the Martin Tyler "AgüerooOOOOOOO" scream from last season which is being repeated every day on SKY Sports (and the Premier League is the most prevalent league). And probably Torres as well for winning the CL and EC.

It's transparent, yes. It's also a popularity contest. Players like Xavi, Iniesta or Pirlo would get more of these individual awards if only a small circle of journalists from football-revelant countries could vote. And not the captain of Tonga simply because Messi or Ronaldo are popstars in their countries. 2010:

Captains:

Germany (Philipp Lahm): 1. Iniesta 2. Sneijder 3. Messi
France (Alou Diarra): 1. Iniesta 2. Xavi 3. Sneijder
England (Rio Ferdinand): 1. Sneijder 2. Iniesta 3. Xavi
Italy (Gianluigi Buffon): 1. Iniesta 2. Sneijder 3. Casillas
Portugal (Cristiano Ronaldo): 1. Xavi 2. Casillas 3. Sneijder

Coaches:

Germany (Joachim Löw): 1. Xavi 2. Messi 3. Forlan
France (Laurent Blanc): 1. Xavi 2. Sneijder 3. Iniesta
England (Fabio Capello): 1. Iniesta 2. Xavi 3. Maicon
Italy (Cesare Prandelli): 1. Sneijder 2. Iniesta 3. Messi
Portugal (Paulo Bento): 1. Xavi 2. Messi 3. Iniesta

putting aside stats for a moment as "no80s" put it, its all about the Magic.

Weird. If it's about magic, hands down, Iniesta wins by a country mile. There hasn't been a player as gracious as Iniesta since Zidane.

Realising how good Messi is does not make you any less of a Barcelona fan. How can people class themselves as been some kind of higher-level Barcelona fan by claiming Xavi is better (or more influential) than Messi, even though after half of the games played they go on about how Messi is god, the best ever etc etc.

Messi simply is the best, or one of the best, ever. So saying he is better than Xavi is no sight on Xavi and does not mean the person who is saying it knows any less about football appreciation or analysis. So stop trying to be pretentious Barcelona supporters / football fans, its pathetic.

I am an undoubted Messi fanboy but I was a Barcelona fan long before he ever appeared. I remember watching his debut quite vividly.

I would say Xavi is more influential to the style/pace of the play, but not nearly as influential on results or threat

Popularity contest?.. i wonder why Becks isnt top three then ? Messi is popular, not cause of the hair, abs or charismatic personality but his god given one in a billion raw talent!

You seem to be missing the fact that humans unlike single cell organisms, tend to have different opinions... we dont all prefer Italian food over Chinese!

Are you expecting these coaches, captains etc, A- Do not watch the sport they live eat and drink night and day ??? or B - All have to give the same answer of say : 1- Messi 2- Cristiano 3 - Iniesta to be considered knowledgeable....?

Also Iniesta is certainly as graceful as Zidane, classy in and out of the pitch, probably the era's best player near the lines and in "no room" situations as well as many other things, hes personally one of my favorite for a long time now (long before the attention he finally gets now),,, but i never mentioned "Grace" i specifically said "Magic" and that is something the 2009 Messi, heck any year Messi has shown the Football world and in fact spoilt the viewers with his Maradona (if i may verb it), Iniesta also has his Magic moments, they are both brilliant none can deny but its not that difficult as a Barca fan or not, to find waldo if you know what i mean.

That is a very subjective opinion. If you think Iniesta is capable of more magic and wtf moments than Messi, that is probably because Messi has spoiled you by being so consistent.

Like I mentioned before, Xavi could have won it in 2010, not because he was the best player in the world but because his achievements were great. Same reason why I said Ronaldo has a lot going for him this time. The only thing that is contentious is you saying Iniesta was "easily better" than Messi in 2009.

Ursegor, you should know that your wish of keeping specialists from certain more lets say "advanced" Footballing countries as the judge was actually the case in 2009 in the shape of some award called the "Ballon d'or" :) and guess who won that award in 2009 before polluting it with the other nations......:messi:

Guys just be happy that both of them play for us, it doesn't matter who wins the balloon do'r as long as its one of them or we end up winning trophies instead of individual awards, Leo and Iniesta themselves aren't interested in who is better so why bother.
