Messi looked ok in my opinion.

My guess is that pep wanted to see how Bojan did on a wing since it feels like the CF position is pretty heavily contested.
I mean, Zlatan or Villa in CF as first choice with Villa able to play left winger in cases where Zlatan gets the CF position. Of course, it would be possible to play Villa, Bojan,Messi but I would guess a more common setup from pep (with no Zlatan) would be Pedro, Villa, Messi.

As others have said, it's still pre-season so no big deal if we don't look super sharp out there imo. Pre-season is there to be used to experiment so we don't have to do that mid season when it's "for real".

Having established that, you cannot expect him to lead Barca to victory in every single game he plays in. The will was there so it´s not about the attitude. Form will come once he gets more training under his belt.
