I asked my buddy the other day : Does Ronaldo make his teamates better?

Answer is clearly no. He plays for himself and for him to be the man.

Messi on the other hand can have 50 assists a year if we had finishers in the same caliber as himself finishing.

And he STILL scores way more than Ronaldo :worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

So as you know, Messi haters and Ronaldo fanboys on other forums and such always bring up Messi's lack of world cup goals. I decided to do a little research. Anyone who watched the 2010 world cup knows that Messi was pretty good as a playmaker and was unlucky not to score but I decided to look back on the facts of the 2006 world cup since people act like he played a lot that world cup.

Group Stage
VS Ivory Coast - Didn't play
VS Serbia and Montenegro - Subbed on at 75th minute and scored in the 88th minute
VS Netherlands - started and subbed off at 70th minute

Knockouts
VS Mexico - subbed on at 84th minute of game that went into extra time
VS Germany - Didn't play

121 minutes and one goal.

That's the equivalent of one single extra time match.

Meanwhile...

Ronaldo's 2006 world cup:

Group Stage
VS Angola - started and subbed off after 60 minutes
VS Iran - started and played all 90 minutes. Scored in 80th minute from a Penalty
VS Mexico - Didn't play

Knockouts
VS Netherlands - started and subbed off after 34 minutes
VS England - started and played all 120 minutes
VS France - started and played all 90 minutes

3rd place match vs Germany - started and played all 90 minutes

484 minute and one goal from a penalty.

Of course we all know that at this point; Messi is a far better player. I just wanted to point out that while Ronaldo is a fantastic player, he hasn't had the best international performances either yet Messi gets much, much more criticism for allegedly not showing up for his national team. Portugal's good performances were due to Figo and Deco while Euro 2012 he wasn't that great either(only very good performance was vs Netherlands).

Did comparison for Maradona some time ago

Messi WC10 is actually at least on par with Maradona WC90, and I don't recall anyone saying he flopped then.

Maradona WC90 0 goals, 2 assists, involved in 1 other goal.
Messi WC10 0 goals, 4 assists, involved in 4 other goals.

The thing was, where as Messi didn't get any help in the QF, Maradona got carried first against Yugoslavia by the defence and Goycochea, then he got again the same help against Italy, just so he would then lose the final.

Don't forget though, Ronaldo is more complete coz he can head the ball. And Messi's 4 Ballon d'ors were obviously because Barca owns FIFA. There is no way he possibly deserved them.

What else can they do? Put a big net in front if all the fans? Also if someone wanted to hurt him then they would more likely get him on the street. He's not the president with 24 hour security (although I'm sure he could afford it)
This could be dramatic, remember Monica Seles.

You know the guy that stabbed her didn't even go to jail?
Didn't even occur to me but you guys have a point. There should be stricter security at stadiums.

they could make it very clear that no one should toch messi... they could give some press announcement and although messi could say some words... this would stop people who love messi so much that they ran on the field.. they would think twice if they would do something her superstar directly adviced them not to

Unfortunately I don't think its practical to have a band of security around the entire stadium. Some stadiums have moats/ditches but its not practical for every team to build one. Perhaps at the end of games security could move out to escort him, similar to the protection NFL managers get at full time.

Anyways it's an unfortunate part of been a celebrity/sportsman. Any know of Nancy kerrigan and tonya harding? Nancy was attacked after leaving the ice rink while in the tunnel. Its impossible to completely protect Messi

You could upgrade security at the stadiums (or anywhere, for that matter) but how far and at what cost? Investing in safety means giving up on convenience, social interaction, etc. And after a while without incidents, people will complain about security being too high. It's human nature, just like it's always too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer.

It's really great that messi has managed to add free kicks to his arsenal. Its always great when you have an expert free kick taker on the team.

I'm happier that he has stopped messi-ing around with his penalties. Now he just knocks them no-nonsense into the side net instead of trying to wrong-foot the keeper with a slow stutter approach.
