Leo Messi is on the verge of breaking a handful of records in his upcoming matches. Here’s an overview of the most important records Messi could break:

Messi is 6 goals away from César, the all-time highest scorer for Barça in the Liga: The Argentine has scored a total of 184 goals in the domestic competition, and he’s only six goals away from César Rodríguez’s mark of 190. If Messi maintains his goalscoring form he’ll surpass the legendary Blaugrana that played for Barça in the 1940s and 50s.

He’s 7 goals from his best scoring tally in the first half of the season: Last season, Messi scored 22 goals before reaching the halfway point in La Liga. This season he has 15, he still has 8 matches to break his own record.

He’s 10 goals away from breaking Müller’s all-time record of goals scored in a calendar year: After beating Pelé’s mark of 75 goals (1958), Messi is on course to surpass the record set by ‘Bomber der Nation,’ who scored 85 goals in 1972. Messi has 10 more matches in 2012 to break the German’s record.

He’s 1 goals away from becoming the all-time scorer in Clásicos: Messi’s most recent two goals against Madrid leave him only one adrift of the mark set by Di Stéfano. Messi could break the record if Barça and Madrid meet in the semi-finals of the Cup, or later on in La Liga.

He’s 74 goals away from Alcántara, all-time highest scorer for Barça (including friendlies): Surely it’s just a matter of time. Messi has already surpasses César as Barça’s highest scorer in official matches, and now the Argentine’s next challenge is to break Paulino Alcántara’s mark of 369 goals for the Club. Messi’s goal tally for Barça, including non-official matches, stands at 295.

He’s 67 goals away from Telmo Zarra, the all-time highest goalscorer in the history of La Liga: Messi already features in La Liga’s all-time Top 10 highest goalscorers list, and he’s only 67 goals away from reaching the mark set by the legendary Athletic Club Bilbao player. The eighth and ninth highest scorers in La Liga, Santillana (186) and Mundo (195), respectively, could be surpassed by Messi in short order. The Argentine’s goal tally in La Liga stands at 184.

He’s 17 goals away from Raúl, the all-time highest scorer in the Champions League: Currently Messi is the third highest scorer in the history of the European competition, only surpassed by Raúl (71 goals) and Van Nistelrooy (56). Messi’s goal tally in the Champions League stands at 54 goals.

the current Argentine squad is pretty bloody excellent dawg. im tipping them for Brazil 14

What? Have you seen the current 11? Only 5 true class players. Masche and the 4 in attack. The defense is crap, keeper average... Against Spain or Germany they have almost no chance.

Against Spain or Germany they have almost no chance.

Who does? At least in the case of Spain maybe Puyol and Xavi will have retired before the 2014 WC or at least grown too old to be as effective as they once was.

As much as I'd like to see Messi lift the trophy, I agree with you in that both Germany and Spain remain nearly unconquerable obstacles.

But I'm not too worried about the 2014. It'll be interesting to see. What's so great about Messi is that he's not a pure striker. He can also act as an incredible midfielder. His passing is only behind Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets these days and he'll continue to grow and learn as long as he plays with those guys. His precision will become sharper and he will become more and more creative in finding space to pass the ball. This effectively means that Messi has not one but two peaks in his career. His peak as a striker will probably be reached around the age of 27-28 but his peak as an attacking midfielder/midfielder will first be reached around the age of 29-31. So at the 2014 WC he will be at his peak as a striker but at the 2018 WC he will be at his peak as a midfielder... and we all know what brilliant midfielders are capable of: Think Zidane back with France or Xavi with Spain these days, both architects of success in El Mundial. He will have two very good oppertunities to get the coveted trophy. The first he will be aggressive, dribbling and scoring... the second he'll be a calculating tactician. If he doesn't win it in 2014 then surely his odds won't diminish in 2018 when such players as Xavi, Puyol and Iniesta (yeah we love them but from the point of view of Argentina should they meet, they're obstacles and central pieces of the Spanish NT) will be older, slower or not playing.

Messi does not play alone, as good as he can be. Argentina´s 11 has several average players. Only the atack is world class.

Barcelona: Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Pedro Rodriguez
Real Madrid: Sergio Ramos
Manchester City: David Silva
Manchester United: David de Gea
Chelsea: Juan Mata
Bayern Munich: Javi Martinez

Kids from FC Barcelona: Deulofeu, Montoya, Bartra & Isaac Cuenca

Random line up (4-3-3):

/*
-------Pedro - Fabregas - Mata--------
-------Thiago - Busquets - Silva-------
----Alba - Ramos - Pique - Montoya----
-------------David de Gea-------------
*/

They all have the same age or are younger than Messi. They are all world class, playing in the best teams except the "kids" that still have 6 years to improve and shine.

Spain will obviously lose a few key players such as Puyol, Iker Casillas, Iniesta, Xavi & Villa, but they already have nice replacements that are top players and still have a few years ahead to gain experience and get better in the next 6 years for the 2018 world cup. There's also a high chance that Spain will get new players obviously in the meantime.

Messi "the midfielder" (too old to be the great striker he is right now) won't be enough against that "basic random lineup".

In my eyes, there's a tiny chance for Messi getting a world cup. I just hope he gets better and gets all the records he can in football. IMO he should forget about the world cup, it's pretty much mission impossible. As a few said already, the only good thing from Argentina is their attack front, nothing else. Spain always dominated teams because they have a great midfield. In 6 years they will still have a great midfield... but also a great defense, a great attack and a great goalkeeper... lol.

You are trippin' if you think Germany is head and shoulders above Argentina. Please compare Argentina in 2014 with Germany from 2010 when they did so well.

Argentina front 4: Messi, Agüero, Higuain, Di Maria

Germany front 4: Özil, Klose, Müller, Podolski

Argentina central midfield: Mascherano, Banega with Di Maria tucked inside and Messi dropping deep

Germany central midfield: Khedira, Schweinsteiger

Argentina defense: Rojo, FF, Garay, Zabaleta, Romero

Germany defense: Badstuber, Mertesacker, Friedrich, Lahm, Neuer

Please don't tell me that you think Germany is better on any position except rightback and goalkeeper.

Germany got the slight upper hand in defense nowadays because of Neuer, Lahm and Hummels who are all better than their Argentinian counterparts. But that's something you can easily compensate with workrate, pressing and proper tactics. You don't need world class players in every position to win a tournament. Spain is the exception but Spain is one of the greatest teams of all time. That's not the benchmark. What Argentina is lacking is self-believe, proper winning mentality, tactics, harmony and they need to gel. And Sabella is slowly fixing all these issues. But they are definitely not lacking talent. When you have Messi, Higuain, Agüero and Di Maria upfront, you can outscore anyone, even if the defense doesn't hold together.
