Benfica game is the last chance to break 103 year old footballing record, most goals in international games, currently tied with 25 goals with Vivian Woodward in 1909.
To think he could break that record and the Müller one tomorrow is insane, I prefer it over it happening at Betis away.

Also remember after the Santos game last year he entered 2012 with 29 goals, which lead to 73, he is currently at 28, insane season.

Imagine Messi playing for the Spanish national team, they could seriously win every Euro and World Cup out there till 2020.

With the Spanish defense and midfield he is worth at least one goal per game. Could of been the strongest national team in history without a doubt, some will say they are already. I'm so dreamy

It's getting pretty ridiculous, I've read somewhere that he has already broken like 70+ records this year. Though that includes some really trivial records, he is still going to break about 15 major, major records.

And to think that it could have easily happened...

actualy there was a funny story about that. back when messi was at la masia, he was pretty unknown in argentina. but they still wanted him to play for argentina, not for spain since he already lived there for so long. but the argentines couldn't even wrote his name correctly back then when they wanted him to play for argentina, they wrote leonel mecci :D

Messi was named to Barça’s squad and he could feature in the starting line-up. “He rested last week and we know that he always wants to play. It’s a Champions League match and he’s excited to play. If he’s on the pitch, it’ll make us stronger,” said Vilanova
The manager played down Messi’s assault on Müller’s record: “We have to be as natural about this as possible. Messi has the chance to beat the record, but it will be more difficult if we’re all focused on him. However, I think he’s used to the pressure.”

He'll play the full match.

In 1973, Barcelona had a deal with Bayern to sign Gerd Muller. German government blocked the transfer, Barcelona signed Cruyff. [cat radio]

Wow.

Barcelona wanted to invite Gerd Muller to the Camp Nou if Messi would beat his record, but his Alzheimer's disease makes it difficult [rac1]

Not to take anything away from what Leo is about to do, but...I saw an info graphic earlier and it stated that both Muller and Pele set there records for a calendar year playing a lot less games (therefore having better goal/games ratios). Has this been mentioned elsewhere at all? or has anyone thought about this?

Regardless of ratios, i still think if Leo breaks the record it's because he is simply the greatest goal scorer and player there ever has been.

Pele - 75 goals in 53 games = 1.416%
Muller - 85 in 60 = 1.417
Messi - 84 in 64 (on-going) = 1.3125%

I wouldn't call it a 'lot less games'.
