I agree with you that Ronaldo's ridiclous long range efforts and wide angled efforts bring his shot stats down, however according the data collected over the past few years Messi is indeed the better finisher, albeit by a very small margin.
Those are the percentages of converted shots.As you can see both players from inside the box and inside the six yard box are well above the average player. It's from outside the box where Messi sets himself apart converting at a ridiculous rate of 12.1... Ronaldo falls behind in this area but as we know he takes a lot of silly shots outside the box. Still messi has the edge from inside the box although it's worth noting that this date is from July 2014.

Thats more like it, stats can be misleading,Ronaldo is way above average as a finisher. Inside the box there is not much difference, but just outside it Messi is absolutely lethal, and i knew that. From just outside the box, Ronaldos power doesnt count for much, it will often be blocked etc., from the really long distances he has the edge. He is not bad at longshots, but he isnt the best either, i recon Bale has considerably better statistic from long range than Ronado, and probably others to. Yes, Messi is a slightly better finisher. But all i was saying was that Ronaldos long range efforts makes him look like a crappy finisher compared to almost every striker, but he really isnt.

I always had the feeling that Messi was a more clinical finisher in that Messi was more in control of his finishes. He would place it perfectly, while C.Ronaldo was more of a blast it at goal and hope..

Messi was the most lethal finisher in the world, inside and outside the box until 2012/13. But both last year and this year, he is behind a bunch of players including Ronaldo. The fivethirtyeight article cumulatively looks at all seasons from 09/10 to 13/14, which is why Messi is so superhumanly ahead of everyone else.
