Neither cr7 or messi have been particulary brilliant in 2014. Far from it actually. But they live on their names. Messi is not going to win ballon this year because Argentina dosent have a good enough team to win wc. Its cr7 or someone Else.

Exactly. Superstar like Ronaldo wins Champions League with a massive stat like 17 goals in 11 matches ---> Ballon D'Or, irrespective of how the team played.
It would be really interesting though if Messi wins the World Cup. I'd be curious to see how the votes are split. Don't think it would be a definite win for Messi.

Normally, WC>CL for favoritism. However, the fact that it's La Decima might make a difference. If Messi doesn't win but does astoundingly well, it'd require him to perform supernaturally for the first part of 14/15 AND for Ronaldo to be meh.

If Messi wins the World Cup then the Ballon d'Or is his, if he performs really well without winning it and has a great start to next season then he can win it anyway.
It doesn't have to be one of these 2 anyway, neither have been the best in the world this year so far. Ronaldo didn't play copa final and was shit is Lisbon so he certainly is not nailed on. If Brazil win the world cup then Neymar could win it, his profile is not as big as Ronaldo and Messi but if he wins the world cup for Brazil in Brazil with Nike backing then he could do it. If Spain win the World Cup again and Iniesta plays his part then he would be in with a chance. If France were to win the World Cup and Ribery plays a major part then he could win.
The World Cup is worth a lot more than the Champions League for this type of thing, aside from Messi 4 years ago a player from the winning team takes the award every year when it was the Fifa world player and the same when it was the Ballon d'Or except before 95 when only Europeans were eligible.
