Yes, in a year in which Messi was nowhere near his current level, won La Liga only, and was injured for a long time. In that sense, Cristiano and Messi were more of a competition to each other than this year, so moments like the one you mentioned were more important than they are now. This year is incomparable to that. Messi has had a brilliant first 6 months so far, has won a treble, and could win Copa America, too. No amount of WC-qualifier goals can overtake the success Messi's had.

He should winn Ballon D'or... Not that he won all but he didn't look only on him self and individual awards! So... This year is - SWAG!!!! And he is "only" 28 and Rondaldo allready 30, so he has 2 years more to play, and I hope he winns all in a 4 Years, one more time tripple, and Word Cup!!! That would be more than any other player ever, for a best player ever!!!

After a treble winning season Messi was always going to win. Wont change that Ronaldo will still be scoring hattricks for fun, highly motivated next season but realistically it should be more about if he would be in the top 3 this year or not than wether or not he can win.
