Calma, calma
Not in this case. Atletico plays like Athletic, with double banks that bulge towards the encroaching man with the ball, whether it is Messi, or anyone else. The goal was the result of the space behind Atletico's high line that should have been exploited better and more often. It had to do with the accuracy of Rakitic's ball, the speed of Alba, and the quickness of Alba's release. Atletico simply got caught out.

Nearly every other promising moment came from a Messi touch. His teammates didn't get him the ball nearly often enough. Here are some typical shots, from only the first period:

Fucking Neymar hogging the ball on the left side!!!

In all screenshots posted: Look where the ball is and in which direction it is going. Of course Messi is left kinda free there. It is either impossible for him to get the ball in those situations or he is in a position that is not dangerous in any way.

That's because Athletic's defensive set-up is meant to take the ball away from the oponent, not just block him via positioning. They're trying to play our defensive system with Pep. Short spaces between the lines, high defensive line, pressing up front (aggresion as well), smother the ball carrier and take the ball back as soon as possible. Unfortunately for them, they make mistakes. We, with Pep, also had games in which we made similar mistakes. That happened especially in 2011-12, when the motivation was low, because this kind of play is very energy demanding. It's much simpler to play positional, "defensive" defence, than "attacking" defence like Bilbao plays, and us used to play back in Pep's days.

Defending used to be treated like the part of play where the defending team just responded to what the attacking team did (and still is treated this way in certain countries). This is one of the reasons why english teams have been left behind recently, they still understand defending as blocking crosses, making clearences and making tackles in 1 vs 1. Great teams never let things go that far anymore.

The mistake was that when Laporte goes up to deal with Messi and don't let him receive the ball between the lines, someone else has to take care of Suarez. But the guy that was supposed to mark Suarez there tries to play a stupid offside trap and finds himself 5m off Suarez. He then finds Rafinha in his eyesight and decides to mark him .

Exactly. Well said.

Maybe some members will understand now.

Lol.
Laporte doesn't go forward to mark messi, there is then 2 defenders free to mark rafinha and suarez without leaving gaps. NO GOAL. Because he follows messi he forces his paired CB to make a (incorrect) decision=goal.

It isn't difficult to understand. The after match pundits said the exact same thing in their analysis. I'm sure you'll tell me the ex-professionals are also wrong, and could learn a thing or two from an online tactical mastermind?

What does my respond to Bernie about Messi's involvement in the game has to do with defensive approach in football in general? Do not know what you are trying to tell me.
Some English teams do press high up the pitch in some games btw. It is only natural when you a goal behind. What they totally neglect is "counter pressing". Attacking with the whole team immediately after giving away possession which is a common thing in Spain, Germany and basically every other league in Europe.

How did it become so constructive other than 'messi is shit again'?!
Don't worry, Messi himself knows the best in pitch than every panels in tv show.
