The conversion rate of our other players is irrelevant because they have taken so few. If I'm not mistaken, Neymar has taken three and scored two so far. That's a conversion rate of 66%. But what's not to say that he'd have 90% if he took the next 7 penalties or whatever. Or the other way around. When there's a huge difference in the number of shots taken, you can't really use the conversion rate to compare. Score one, miss one, and that's 50%. But you might score the next 15 times. Messi has taken so many that his conversion rate shows a fairly realistic number. A total of 3 or 5 or 10 penalties is incomparable to that.

i dont know what u guys are talking about, but no one but messi should take our penalty kicks, he scored his fare share of really important penalty kicks, those are the ones that count for me.

We can't displace Messi from taking penalties, it would cause unnecessary frustration.

But I have a bad feeling that if he doesn't get it together his poor penalty form is going to cost us.

Agree. With 400+ goals, and all the talent he is as arguably the GOAT, how can we take it away from him? Just have to back him. Despite that miss yesterday, still scored 2 goals and assisted one.

Damn! Three times as many as the runner-up. That's just incredible.

When the player does as much as Messi does for Barca, you couldn't possibly hold it against him when he misses a penalty, even in a crucial moment. Because without him, the team wouldn't get as far as it did in the first place.

Perfectly put. Nail hit on head.

let's just hope that messi gets better at it or starts delegating again. Anyone thinking that the big man should be told what to do -delusional.

I had a look, Messi's penalty's by season for Barcelona and Argentina (including in shootouts):

2006-07: 1/1 (100 %)
2007-08: 5/6 (83%)
2008-09: 4/6 (67 %)
2009-10: 3/3 (100 %)
2010-11: 7/9 (78 %)
2011-12: 15/18 (83 %)
2012-13: 7/8 (88 %)
2013-14: 11/13 (85 %)
2014-15: 10/14 (71 %)
2015-16: 1/3 (33 %)
total: 64/81 (79 %)

by competition:

La Liga: 38/44 (86 %)
CL: 8/11 (73 %)
Argentina NT: 14/16 (88 %)
SSC: 2/3 (67 %)
Copa del Rey: 2/7 (29 %)

So while he was never brilliant at it, he used to be solid (83 %) its only since last season that he's become a bit shaky at it.
