Messi is still the far better player (a bigger gap than ever before) but everything is going his way with club and country while everything is going against Messi.

I doubt Messi will win another trophy apart from Copa Del Ray. Another La Liga if he's lucky and that's if he stays another 4 or 5 years. Maybe a Europa League.

Penaldo will win another 2 or 3 ballon d'ors. 2 or 3 CL titles and a few more La Ligas and maybe even a World Cup. He'll score over 100 international goals and break the record in that.

His legacy will be better than Messi's now thanks to this club and their stupidity (Argentina's too).

Do you have such a defaitist attitude in everyday life too?
Some of you are so negative all the time i wonder how you guys function.

I`m sorry, but this is just wrong. He loves Argentina and plays for Argentina with passion. That`s how it should be for every player and not shit like Diego Costa playing for Spain.
Yes, it would`ve been easier for him if he played for Spain, but that`s not the point of international football.
Also, playing for Spain would`ve been IMO the thing that would hurt his legacy. Abandoning his native country NT to play for Spain with a dream team.

Why is Messi obligated to be so passionate about Argentina, but then get slammed for 'not being Maradona' and underappreciated for what he does? Does it not go both ways? Not saying it's the ethical decision to play for Spain, just the right one as far as his legacy is concerned. A player like Messi deserves to win the WC and not only does Argentina have 0 chance of providing that, he gets roasted for not bringing it himself.

Lol at the idea that winning a WC with Spain would've hurt his legacy, he would be the unquestionable GOAT and there is literally no two ways about it. Frankly, don't give a fuck about "native country" this or that, winning a WC would seal his status. Spain was no dream team back around 2005 when Messi had the chance to join them, he wasn't abandoning his home nation for a "dream team". At this point he's spent more of his life in Spain than Argentina and Argentines have done fuck all to appreciate him and he gets unnecessarily flamed for the lack of success they've had. They absolutely don't deserve him and that's all but a fact at this point after several years of mediocrity, criticism, and weak support.

Kinda pointless arguing about this now as those things happend more then a decade ago and are impossible to change.

I agree that they are assholes that don`t deserve him, don`t get me wrong. But the point is that you don`t give a fuck about native country this or that, but he does. He is not obligated to be passionate about Argentina, but he just is. There was more than one interview with him in which he said that he would give everything for a trophy with Argentina.

He just loves his country and wants to bring them joy and that`s all there is to say about that.

I know he does, and that's his personal position on the matter. I also think that, at the time, choosing between Argentina/Spain is pretty much a coin toss as he couldn't have known Spain would go on to win 3 back to back major titles including the WC. I'm not blaming him for that as, with the information he had at the time it was not a blatantly wrong decision.

Neither am I saying it matters now, as it was more than 10 years ago and practically irrelevant at this point. However, it was a mistake in retrospect. Not one that he could've foreseen but a mistake nonetheless. It's not to blame him to suggest he should've chosen Spain, just that looking at it in hindsight the rational choice was Spain and never Argentina considering the latter have given him nothing in return for his years of service and suffering. At least at a club level he enjoyed many years of incredible success prior to this bad period, for his NT he's experienced almost nothing but pain and I blame Argentina for that, not him. They've wasted the GOAT and it's all their fault.

Yeah, I agree that Argentina wasted his best years and it`s a damn shame, but I doubt it would be the same for him if he had won the World Cup with Spain, as it would`ve been if he had won it with Argentina.

He was born in Argentina, his parents and family are Argentinian so its logical he chooses Argentina.
He isn't Spanish and doesn't feel like he's a Spaniard so to me this really is a dumb discussion because it was never a realistic option.

If not for our board and the Argentina NT, there would be no debate that he's the greatest player of all time by a massive distance. Hell if we had more luck against Inter and Chelsea, he'd have 6 CLs right now. Feel really bad for him, Penaldo should absolutely not be anywhere near him either in individual awards or team trophies.

Such a waste. DonAndres, you're spot on.

And the thing is, even if he moves, unless it's to RM (which will never happen, thank god), I'm not even sure it'd increase his chances of winning CLs or even Ballon d'ors that much. The team Madrid have behind Penaldo is just too good. And they have their luck if they're ever in trouble. There are about 5 teams, probably less, that can ever even hope to compete with them, their brand name and financial might are simply too powerful when combined with the team they currently have on the pitch. Every good player wants to play for them. We're one of those 5 teams, but we're run by morons. Even the likes of QSG and Man City, despite having superior financial resources, can't hope to match Madrid's brand name and status as a long time footballing juggernaut.

Getting to the stage now where Messi is going to have to leave to salvage something from the rest of his career.

Had a dream last night that Madrid win at the nou camp 7-1 after Barca scoring first.
Can only remember a goal each for casamiero, kroos, and ronaldo scoring the last claiming credit for the win.

Also remember in the dream Messi's prime dominance being forgotten and no longer touted as the best ever.

One thing I have learned in football is people's memories are terribly short. This goes for any player.

edit. was glad to wake up knowing it was only a dream lol

He could leave Barca and go where?

PSG? Doubt it. RM? Out of question? City? No guarantee of CL. City have a soft underbelly and are a work in progress.
Bayern? Won't pay his insane wages? Juventus? Milan, Inter? Again wage bill plus they're not that great.

I can see a Messi led City winning EPL but to Messi the Cl is clearly where it's at.City have only managed one Cl semi. They are a side with no European pedigree whatsoever. Not to mention the weather and food are crap in Manchester.
