Messi and Ronaldo are proof that a good team is imperative for winning titles, no two ways about it. The great Michael Jordan didn't win his first championship or even play in the NBA finals till the age of 28, when the Bulls finally gave him a team that could support a title run. Lebron James has only ever managed to win 1 ring with the Cavs and that too after they built a team that could actually rival the Warriors (minus KD). Messi has had a lack in silverware ever since RM's rise and Barca's decline, and the reverse is true for Ronaldo back in the Pep Era. All these players are all time greats in their sports, and showed exactly how great they are even in the periods of their careers where they were not winning titles.

No man rules alone, and the notion that Maradona led scrub teams to WC and Serie A titles is ridiculous, outdated, and refuted. Not to mention that he played in a man-to-man defensive era where collective pressure, the most effective defensive tactic in the history of football, was not implemented.

The team is not the metric for judging the individual. The likes of Ronaldo having an international title over Messi is literally a matter of chance/circumstance, as Eder did what Higuain could not in 3 separate finals. Frankly, Maradona never reached a level of performance that Messi has except for that WC in Mexico.

Di Stefano? Lol at the idea anyone here watched him, or that the era of football he played in was even a small fraction of the level it is now. Frankly doubt TS even watched Maradona, after even suggesting he could've judged Di Stefano accurately.

Rightly spoken. Trying to draw comparisons without taking into considerations between time, teams, tactics, errors, actions, morale, probability, luck in single event that takes place once every four year is a clear senseless case of reductionism. Many players would actually turn out to be very close to fitting the simplified criteria of being "the greatest ever", and it would ultimately make no sense.

you can also add tom brady to the list, 10 year drought in his prime because he didn't have the offensive weapons or the defense (outside of 07).

Lol you and your Maradona fetish and fantasies. Theres no ifs in football. Its a different era, people then cant even see the players in their fuzzy black and white glitchy ass TV. U cant compare even if u want to. Too bad. Who knows Messi would actually win 3 world cups if he travelled back time. No one knows for sure. A simple altercation in time and space would have changed the entire history and caused a mass of butterfly effects. So stop your wishful thinking.

And possibly the "best" Argentina side in 2014 did so little in attacking bcos they were sitting so deep in their box and relied on Messi to dribble and bring the ball forward. Messi was hardly near the goal and was rarely at the receiving end. Just bcos Ron Vlaar made that one good tackle? Lmao. Messi was marked by 4-5 players at the right flank alone. And Ron Vlaar still missed the penalty in the end. He still did jack shit. The clearest chances were offered to Higuain, he even had time with nobody pressuring him at all and still missed the goal completely. Tats almost as bad as Torres miss in 2013. Messi's one was a little tight and far away frm goal, even if he closed the angle slightly it would have hit neuer or the post. Palacio missed the best chances against Netherlands and the finals as well.

At the end of the day, Messi has choked for the NT, no two ways about it. Even CR7 has won a european championship with a garbage team. Messi has too win a trophy with Argentina or people will always judge him for his poor NT record.
