If Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, De Bruyne, Griezmann, or Kane leads their country to World Cup, they'll win Ballon D'or.

Otherwise it'll be between Messi/Ronaldo, I would say Ronaldo slightly ahead now but Messi could easily overtake him if he has a better World Cup and start to next season.

No way Ronaldo had better season so far. He was trash for half a season. Real was huge failure in League and Cup and he didn't do anything in CL seminal and final. Messi is ahead.

people who really think that Messi can win balon d'or with his walking show in CL are dreaming, we know that Messi played a better overall season than Ronaldo but that's not the point about this award, you can't win balon d'or with 6 goals and premature elimination in CL against the freaking underdog Rome, regardless how good you have been in the other competitions.

as already said DonAK Ronaldo just needs that Argentina and Brazil fail in Russian, maybe there is a long shot with Griezman if France wins the WC, considering that France Football is a french magazine and they could push him like no tomorrow if he wins.

Would recommend watching NBA finals that are going on right now just for LeBron, to get the same feeling of anger/disgust you get while watching Messi. A guy is the best ever but you feel bad for him because he is surrounded by players that aren't even worthy enough to receive a pass from him.

Watching the Cleveland Cavaliers last night was like watching Barcelona and Argentina and experiencing all the miserable frustrations that come along with both.

If messi was as expressive as lebron he would do the exact same reaction in 2014 world cup at higuan lol. That expression is so livid. I will never get that off my head.

Even so, Salah has a higher claim to it than Cristiano.

Messi's legacy in regards to the World Cup is the best example for why this tournament holds too much weight. If Messi picked Spain instead of Argentina his international trophy cabinet would be much bigger, and somehow that means the player is better. Trophies are important, but one that can only be won once every four years where the success is more-so dependent on how many exceptional players are playing at the same time whilst being healthy and playing a number of different positions should hold less weight. This isn't the 70's and 80's anymore, and I am aware this opportunity wasn't exactly afforded to the greats of the previous generations, but as it stands the best football is played in Europe's top five leagues and there are annual tournaments being played at the highest level where the stakes create excessive pressure. Sustained greatness in this atmosphere should validate a player's legacy. This is not to say the World Cup (or World Cup performance) can't be used as an argument to assert why a particular player is great, because circumstances are important, but the reverse, that is, if particular player hasn't won it therefore their legacy is tainted, is ridiculous.
