Voting him 5th is an absolute disgrace, the man won 2 major trophies, won the Golden Boot,is among the best in creating and dribbling categories and is killing it so far in the CL this season. He should have finished 3rd or something.

That said,he brought this to himself. If he had reached the CL semifinals/final and/or the WC semifinals,he could have won his 6th.The hard truth is that he choked against Roma and although France was vastly superior to Argentina,he could have avoided them by finishing first in his group.

I think the 2019 Ballon D'or has got Leo's name on it. If he can Lead Barca to the CL this season with more performances like against Tottenham and have a decent run in the Copa America

Disgracefull that he's only 5e, that award has become a 'narrative' award borderline corrupt as i suspect plenty of journalists vote for very shady reasons.

Seeing Messi name next to 5th player rank made me laugh so hard. But maybe this just pisses him off, we all love angry messi. But then again, he seems so mature that he looks like he dont give a damn about any of those balon de ceremony things.. I dont know what i like better, but just do your thing you beatiful human being

It is no longer about individual performance but a team trophy award. Modric won it because he was part of the Real Madrid CL squad and the Croatian squad that did well in the WC. Griezmann is ahead of Messi simply because of France winning the World Cup. Their individual performance? Not that much to impress.

Don't pay too much attention to it.

If the award is about winning the CL then probably. I think he might have won his last CL trophy in 2015 unless something major changes occurs and we get someone with balls to drop seniors and underperforming players.

This season I have absolutely no hope of even getting past the R16 if we get a difficult opponent there. Nothing the team and manager are showing right now indicates they're even good enough to be among the top contenders.

It was never just about winning CL, but it was a deciding factor
Winning Liga, having great season and winning Copa America would boost his chances, if a team that has no clear candidate (like City or Bayern for example) win the CL then Messi has a huge chance to still win it without CL title.

It is no longer about individual performance but a team trophy award.

This indicates that at some point of its history it wasn't about trophies? truth is the Cr7/Messi era was the most fair in this award and was more about individual than any other era before, mainly because those guys was just too dominant and above the rest.
People will see that in the next decade when no one clearly above the rest as it once was. Though having bigger poll helps a bit
