13 - Iñaki Peña

He is probably unhappy with the current GK situation. My guess Flick wants to see Tek in action and test if Tek can be a difference maker when necessary. Pena has a contract ending in 2026. But my guess is that he is going to renew like Lunin did. There is not shortage of good goalkeepers on the market and it is difficult to see where Pena could go because all clubs in major leagues are fully staffed in the GK department.

If his situation does not improve in coming months, there’s little doubt he will be moved in summer since he would be a fool to renew

We seem to read this with every prospect goalkeeper, but the lad training with the first team, Iker Rodriguez, is said by coaches to be the most talented goalkeeper they have ever seen come through La Masia.

And that's not forgetting Kochen who is the B goalkeeper currently and highly rated himself.

My point is that Pena has been good this year and a very good backup based off of this season- but not last season.

So yes, he should probably be in the mix and be extended provided his wage doesn't increase or if it does increase- only marginally. And only if what he has shown this year is his true level and not some short term spike.

But what is coming from behind has much higher potential.

And what is Infront (Stegs and Won) is better but also at the age to transition to what is coming from behind.

It is what it is.

But what do some prospects, totally unproven in real football, have to do with Pena?
And if Kochen was so highly rated, he would already be starting games, Tek and Pena are both dogshit, they aren't the first choice in any LaLiga Team.

Based on continued comments from Flick, Iñaki will be moved in summer

Not even an injury to the Pole will change it

Something must have happened behind the scenes. Reporter asked Flick again about Pena and Flick just brushed it off with one sentence: "Tek is No 1"

When pressed again he mentioned both are great but praisf personality and style of Tek.

Difficult to read between the lines as Flick is very respectful in his comments. Even towards refs.

That's expected, even if he was starting but especially now that he's to the bench.

If anything I believe we should get some money for him. After all he did have a few pretty convincing performances even on the biggest stage which might have attracted the richer clubs.

Peña seems very well suited to Flicks play. One might think there simply must be more to it. Because from our view what can you take away from Peña? He has been lowkey decent, much better than almost anyone expected. Szczęsny has had his mistakes in pretty much every of his first few games.
So what did happen? Might really be that showing up late has made Flick change his mind regarding GK position...

Barça can win the UCL this year. There is the potential for it.

But winners of UCL have outstanding goalkeepers. This is how it is. Take all of them and see if their keepers were not at their top form when they won it.

You will always receive goals in UCL stages, cause your opponents are very good, cause even when you dominate you can't control all the games entirely. Not possible in UCL.

So there will be moments where losing or winning will depend on your goalkeeper being able to make crucial saves.

Tek has proven to be an elite keeper who at top form in top games can be this kind of keeper who can win you games. Pena has not proven that, even if he did good this year.

Maybe that is the reason Flick is playing Tek. He wants him to regain his top form, cause only a keeper of his talent at top form can allow Barça to win the UCL. Otherwise Barça won’t.

If Barça was first in La Liga during winter break, Flick would have kept Peña I feel. But it looked to be lost and Flick needs a deep run in UCL. Otherwise the season will be a failure despite playing beautiful attacking football. Barça needs a big title this year. With the high line, Flick needs a top top top top goalkeeper. And it's logic to gamble on Tek.

I know Tek has made a number of errors but I just think he has the bigger personality and ability to make big saves in big matches.
It's a good problem to have. Competition for places at this club should be normal. Anyone who feels otherwise should move on.

All 3 gks should be out in summer imo.
We would have a couple more trophies if we exchanged Ter Stegen for a proper keeper with box presence a decade ago, but alas... When you can 'bass de ball moov de ball', like Pep would put it, you are almost guaranteed a spot at the table at Barca.

Hansi Flick and Iñaki Peña had a tense exchange after the goalkeeper asked why he's benched lately. Flick pointed to his lateness before the Super Cup semifinal and felt he wasn’t owning up to other mistakes this season. Peña left frustrated, feeling his chances of playing were now even slimmer.
