13 - Iñaki Peña

Doesn't make that save in Mestalla though.

Woj is looking better every game.

By reports it ain't the first time Pena has been late. If true, can't be doing that after only just establishing your starting position.

I do think it is starting to look personal though. At the least Pena could have played one of the competitions like Copa.

I suspect Pena reacted bad to Flick's measure to put him on the bench in the Supercopa after coming late once. Maybe he reacted arrogantly, maybe he trained unmotivated the next day.
That's where you lose with Flick.

Could be. Flick was backing Pena even when many asked for Tek.

Whatever the case something that we don't know (besides being late once) must have happened.

Also, Casado, or someone, mentioned Pena specifically for being one of the hardest workers so probably not lax attitude in training either.

Kounde was also benched for coming late once and after that he normally participated again. So Flick isn't someone to hold a grude for coming late once, something else must have happened.

Flick/his staff might not rate Inaki highly to begin with.

If Inaki has reacted as poorly to his benching as some reports suggest then it's a shame. He should count himself lucky that he's even at Barca right now. Had he not been a La Masia graduate and if the club weren't in a financial mess he would have been gone a long time ago.

He had a golden chance to do something at Gala, but was benched the second Muslera returned because he was average.

Logically, had Stegen's injury happened in the Summer pre season while Szczęsny was let go by Juve, Pena could have only dreamt to have a chance to compete with him as effectively as he did...Of course, 7 seasons Juve number 1 is more a viable option than an incognito gk sub at least on paper.

Still, Inaki had a good run and made a good resume or would have made it. Should have known his place in the row though, and realized that he wouldn't make it Prima Balerina at the club of this statue, no matter his good streak of performances. Now he has a question mark of being more a liability than an asset.

Maybe fucked up royally...got too emotional or had some hot blooded reaction. Germans don't like hot blooded, reactionary subordinates. I personally know something about it because I was fired from my cozy, but boring as fuck IT position 25 years ago by someone whose last name was Stadke...reason given was inappropriate behavior at the workplace. Ha ha ha...

Sounds like excuse by Flick imo. Flick just figures needs a taller keeper to have shot at CL.
Yeah...but the question remains why he was so anti-Szczesny at the very start he was acquired. Unless Wojtek got too rusty but had he? It was merely a couple of months he wasn't training...all too many players came straight back to the lineup from a much longer injury time and inactivity.

Also, there's no clear justification on the performance side.
Tall or not tall, Pena was actually better and firmer, quicker with his sweeper role. Szczęsny can't be trusted there with Nueuer stuff at all. that's given. Something must have gone abysmally wrong on the Flick - Pena line, and something too sensitive to publicize, that's my bet.
