23 - Jules Kounde

Depth is an issue when you expect to have multiple options of the same profile. We just don't have that. And I don't think it is good to build the squad to fit Flick's dogmatic approach either. You will have an unbalanced squad that the next manager might not favor as much.

What we really need is a back up for him that flick trust.

Clearly Fort isn't that,a more traditional FB for cheap.

I believe in Landry but that's 2 seasons away.

We need just someone who can get minutes tbh. Not necessarily same profile.
G.Martin is far from sane profile if Balde and is getting more minutes than he deserves. otoh, Araujo isn't getting minutes as RB when he is similar to Kounde. Flick might be stubborn a bit but he isn't hell bent on having exact same profile for each position.

There's a big gap in technical quality between Kounde and Araujo imo. There's little use for Araujo in Flick's system unless we need to defend a result. Which we almost never choose to do in 11 vs 11.

You clearly haven't watched Araujo play at RB under Xavi the few times he did

- Tiers above in defensive performance in every fact of the game
- Better with the ball: running when he should, passing when he should
- Better as a threat close to or around the box

People often criticise our legends for getting complacent after years of winning everything.
What is Kounde's excuse? Won La Liga in 2023?

He needs to be moved this summer and replaced by a focused and hungry player.

Kounde is 26, there is a lot of football left in him. I think replacing him would maybe not be the best move. Very rarely you can see fullbacks show elite performances both offensively and defensively in modern football. We saw him shut some of the best wingers down in Euros, we also saw him combine really well against Betis - he has it in him.

How many alternatives are there? Are they really better? I don't know. We should bring a good backup to manage Kounde's unbelievable minutes and if he turns out to be better, it won't be a problem to sell Kounde. Many clubs would love to have him.

The idea of replacing him is fans just venting frustration tbh. It is niether realistic or priority.
We need him to play reasonable minutes and have competition for him.

I would love to see guys like Gaya and Mingueza here to rotate with our fullbacks and give them a much needed rest. They aren't ideal players but they belong to the la liga level at least, unlike both Martin and Fort, for the time being.
