The rumor is coming from TV3. They reported that Verm wasn't fit, but somehow zubi and the board decided to go on with the signing. These people NEED to leave ASAP.

Según la explicación de Grau, la revisión médica que se le hizo a Vermaelen cuando llegó al Barça, fue más completa de lo habitual y se alargó durante prácticamente todo un día. Al final de la misma, los médicos del club aconsejaron a Zubizarreta y a la dirección deportiva del club que lo mejor era que el jugador pasara por el quirófano antes de fichar, porque no se fiaban de su estado físico. Pero el director deportivo decidió que no, que era mejor un tratamiento conservador y ficharle sin pasar por el quirófano.

At the end of the medical, the club doctors told zubinepto and the board that Vermaelen should had surgery before being signed, because they were unsure about his physical state. But zubinepto decided for no surgery, that a conservative treatment would be better, and signed him without the surgery.
