Yeah, also the fact that he raised his level by magnitude right in time in most difficult scenario of the season is also sign of great pedigree. With Ter is always the opposite. Can be hero against Eibar, but whenever a stressful, unfavorable situation occurs against risky odds in crucial moment - pants are being shat. Worst trait a goal tender could have.

Szczęsny is great, he'll stop 5 100% chances a game (and blunder 1 easy save). Still worth it.

In Polish NT he always competed with Fabiański, and Fabiański was considered more reliable/boring, but Szczęsny had higher ceiling and was better at saving penalties. All the best "bus parked" Polish NT games that were saved by the goalie were with Szczęsny despite the fact that Fabiański played a lot.
Szczęsny bingo status:
- stupid mistake (almost) costing the game - Check
- unnecessarily risky move - TBD
- saving a game on his own - Check
- saving a penalty - TBD

What I saw was a lot of saves you would surely expect any gk to make. And then a very ugly blunder taking down Belotti on the offside pen.
now remember how many of those long shots and easy chances Stegen converts into goals with freezes, weak arms and low aerial reach.

Also that save in the first minute and a couple of close-distance saves were not easy.

Which is about couple of magnitudes above what we have used to with Terrier. Yeah, low standards. Tek is just a decent professional goalkeeper. A novelty and thus all the clamour about it now from average Barca fan.
This is it. He isn't mega talented or some superstar but he can hold his nerve and he has a professional mentality.

He's a reliable 6/10. Which is in fact better than what we've had.

You can trust him to play at least at an average level in important games. Ter Stegen is much more talented but he's mentally weak.

He positions himself well so catches a lot of shots that are not so naive with absolute ease. It's also not all such saves, for example the Akturkoglu header when he was close to the goal, that was monster reflexes. Commands the penalty box, something we haven't seen in a long time. I think he deserves the praise he gets after this match.

Big keepers imperative to modern football. I'm glad Flick and Woj, through a bit of divine intervention, have managed to change the perception of this club and we can move forward.

As Madrids have shown with Oblak and Courtois, it is better to teach a huge elite shot stopper how to play the ball basically than it is to teach a good possession keeper how to grow taller.

I was legit thinking the same on my way home.

Tall keepers is a must in today's game.

Not everyone can be a short king like Valdez.

Those extra couple of inches of makes a difference in getting to balls you other wise wouldn't.
