32 million for a guy that we don't necessarily need, is 26 and he'll be a bench player.

Do they have a fetish for throwing 30m on every guy that moves?

This is seriously depressing. smh

So we want to have a defense of
pique--umtiti starting

marlon, mascherano and inigo martinez as backups?? would only make sense if we loan out marlon...? so we sell mascherano next summer but then what about the colombian coming in

30m for Inigo is not a bad deal especially now when we are loaded with money and everybody knows it.

Edit: It makes me wonder about the future of Yerry Mina, a player that we could surely use.

Yes it is imo. When you already have 4 CB + Yerry Mina coming for 9 million in January, then it's a waste. And it's not even a deal. If reports are true, we're gonna pay the release clause and that's it. We released Bartra, a smiliar type of player for what? 8 million. to now buy for 30m? This is farcical.

Sorry it doesn't make any sense. We should have other priorities.

Yerry is coming in 2018 summer as far as I know. We don't have eyes on the training ground and know how players have fared there. It may very well be that Mascherano just doesn't have what it takes anymore because of his age or Marlon is simply not ready to play for Barcelona yet. If Valverde feels like he needs a good back up CB I trust him. With a good back up CB we could have avoided at least a bit of that farce against Juventus last year where Mathieu played

Inigo renewed his contract last year but I noticed he intentionally didn't have his release clause raised. 32 million is a joke these days depending on how you look at it, I guess he intentionally left it at 32 in hopes some big team would pay it out in the next couple of seasons.

This summer he apparently had offers from City and Inter but both teams ended up backing away a bit due to that clause as La Real made it clear they weren't going to negotiate for him. It appears though going by several Basque journalists we will pay off his clause and he's keen to join us.

Didn't know about Mina coming only next summer. Fair enough.

But still, spunking 30m is not the answer. He's not one for the future and he's going to be a bench player at best. You can't be going throwing around 30 million for reserves. That's not how a successful club works. Think about it, when you want to sign another player next time, other team's boards gonna throw this right back in your face. "Hey man you want our decent quality guy, 50 million and it's a deal! Why not, you threw 32m on a reserve." And so on and so forth. That's how things spiral out of control. The wages are exactly the same. Every other average bench player is on close to 5m a year.

Mathieu is not a yard stick with which we should compare future buyings. We paid too much for him too. We should be wiser than that. And buying Inigo Martinez falls right into that category.

Agree to disagree then. I could be wrong in the future and he could be great buy but i just don't see it.

Valverde just as with every coach we had before him, Has the right to request certain players that he feels will help his project.
Not every signing has to make sense or be approved by the fans, Which usually happens after they're satisfied with him through youtube highlights (That's the truth)
He's been a coach in la liga for 11 years, He's in no doubt more knowledgeable about la liga players than we are.

Anyway, It's been reported that will we'll only start to go after him after we get our new shiny toys of the market (Couthinio and dembele).

It's probably BS rumours but if true then maybe EV is not as high on Marlon as he seemed to be before he saw him in trainings. Maybe he thinks a loan would be better for him to play regularly and return next season. I'm not totally against that. I believe Marlon is good enough to be our 4th CB but at the same time it's true he probably won't get as much playing time as he needs to develop. Inigo would make a sense in that case. He's established and experienced La Liga defender. He didn't really improve much over the last 4-5 seasons but maybe one of the reasons for that is he was staying in Sociedad for too long and they (as a team) were quite a mess during most of those times under coaches like Moyes and Arrasate after Montanier (and more importantly Griezmann) left. But he did have a good last season under Eusebio whose system is close to ours.

Another reason for possibly getting him is if we are still targeting Paulinho alongside Coutinho. So if we'd get both we would have all three non-EU spots occupied and Marlon would have to go on loan.

Great job by the board addressing our most dire need with this signing!
