If they were going to sign a CB they should have got Lemos.

What a strange signing, the board actually are going to announce this guy right after the Qataris and Neymar played us.

FFS.

Lemos is one of the most overrated young defenders atm, sure he can score goals but jesus christ he has a lot of lapses in concentration and leaves much to be desired position-wise.

Edit: IMO Lemos would be a better DM than CB.

Only 2 years older than Umtiti. Should be a good signing as long as we don't screw Marlon.

Ideally, we should want to sell Masch and Verma this summer making Pique and Umtiti undisputed starters with Inigo and Marlon being the backups for them.

32 million for a backup cb? the times we live in...:shakeshead:

This makes zero sense, unless Marlon isn't as good as people say & we won't sign mina, & masch will be sold.

Those 3 conditions are needed for this signing to make sense

Maybe Valverde is planning on playing him or Masche as a CDM? Well if that means we are not getting Paulinho I am okay with it hahah :d

People on this forum will always complain. It's funny.

This is a good deal. Only 26 years old with and wont cost much in this market. After this season he'll likely be 3rd choice with Mascherano gone and Marlon still green. Will get plenty of matches. That's four quality CBs, which a club like Barca need.

Genius move if true, spending 32M on a backup CB

Valverde and Martinez have the same agent.

Guys, about Marlon and Mina, imo, you are putting too much faith in them.
Marlon and Mina are roughly guys like Munir, Sandro, Halilovic, Adama etc.

We buy them for cheap and see how they will turn out.
If they turn into a world class=awesome.
If they fail, we will sell them for 1-5 millions and just buy 1-2 new talents every new summer.

Too many of you imo have too high expectations of guys like Marlon.
I am not saying that Inigo is good, but look at it this way:
Verm is a history.
Mathieu is probably gone.
Masch is poor in the last few years.
So, we have only Pique and Umtiti.
If one gets injured, we have only Masch, who is bad.
Marlon played only a few matches in a senior career. So, in a Cl semis, if Umtiti is injured, we have only Pique and poor Masch. Marlon is NOT a serious option.

So, in some way, I could understand a need for the 3rd choice Cb.

Also, imo, one more hint: don't expect too much from guys like Marlon, Mina and similar.
They are new Munirs, Sandros and similar.
Chances are imo 1 out of 10 that we will seriously count on those guys one day.

Imo, saying: don't buy a new Cb since we have Marlon and Mina, is similar to: don't buy Dembele, we have Lee and a few other exciting young Cfs from La Masia.

That last bit is so retarded.
I got what you were saying up until that point, lost me with that bit

The point is: we'll neglect the current short term future of a first team by not buying expensive players, because we have La Masia players who's chances to make it are 10%.

I know that we all want La Masia players to play. But we can't play someone just because we need more La Masia kids on a field.

Mina and Marlon have zero European experience.
Marlon has very low amount of senior matches played ever.

Inigo played for years in La liga, knows the opponents, language and again, has 100s of La liga matches on his back.

Imo, Inigo vs Marlon&Mina is a no brainer in my eyes.
The only valid argument is that we could have bought a better 25 aged defender for that money.
But again, we need a player who can play RIGHT AWAY in tough La liga and CL matches, like Inigo.
Not some "guys for the future" like Marlon and Mina.

If we'll buy Dembele and Coutinho, we will be fighting for LaLiga and a Cl right away.
For that, you need 3-4 world class defenders.
Not future prospects like Bartra, Marlon, Mina and similar.

We can spend 220m on Dembele and Coutinho, and then lost a Cl because we had to play another Mathieu/Masch/Marlon in semis.

We do need a solid backup to Umtiti/Pique and if indeed Marlon is not ready for the bigger matches (which could easily be the case) and Masche is not on a top level anymore (which is the case), then I think that this buy is more than logical.

Valverde could have known this from the beginning, but a new CB was maybe not on the map since we would not have the finances to bring a new CB after getting a RB and a CM. However, know with Neymar's money we can afford that and strengthen the team for the new season in that position as well.

So overall, if this transfer does not stop by any means the purchase of Coutinho and Dembele, I am OK with it. And in today's market this amount is not that huge for a player, who has established himself in La Liga and have the experience in the league. He should have no problems settling in the club, which is great, having in mind that the season starts in like ten days.

Yup this makes sense when you see it at that way.

Looks like the plan is to sign him and loan out Marlon.

Makes sense tbh, Marlon being 4th choice here wouldn't do him much good.
