6 - Gavi

He needs to spend time developing to eventually return to a CM role.

These roles like AM, DM, LW etc are roles which are too mobile and physical for him, and in the case of DM, too tactical. His best chance of being a good contributor is to go back to center-mid and focus on linking play, spotting runs, being creative etc.

His talent is his technique but none of his play seems to be based on his technique anymore. And its been this way for a long time.

He needs physical improvement, particularly in terms of mobility, but other than that, he will be much more useful if he stops trying to be something he's not. Even though I don't rate him super high he's still much better than what he's shown this season, which is mid table.

That would be lunacy and weakening team to fit Gavi in.
Pedri is up there with best around this season. There would be no reason to weaken that area.
If Pedri up top can still roam freely and drop deep. But for now no chance for Gavi as a CM cause Pedri is in different realm.
See I am not advocating for Gavi to be a starter in place of Pedri. No.
Pedri's best role is beside the pivot, and there is not a single player in the world I would take over him.
It's just with only Gavi, Pedri and Fdj available for the Midfield. I believe :
Pedri as a 10 and Gavi - Fdj as the pivot is the best outcome for us.
Or let Gavi on the LW and play Raphinha as a 10.

Give me another solution if you will, with Pedri - Gavi - Fdj and Raph available?

What is the question?

If Gavi has to play where does he play if only Pedri and FDJ available?

I would prefer the set up with Gavi at AM and Pedri/FDJ deeper to keep Pedri where he is but not sure what relevance that has really.

Gavi in Pedris position would be big downgrade and putting Pedri in weaker spot not worth it.

You don't move Pedri to accommodate someone like Gavi or Frenkie. Pedri has to play in his best position, you move other players to make it work.

The answer is, Gavi is currently not good enough to start.

On performances in league he is lucky if 3rd pick for any of the midfield roles.

He has been absymally bad in league and CL.

But also Flick does try to play players into form that he sees an upside to - See the GK, FDJ and now its Gavi but that runs out.

In league he is one of the worst in the whole squad for chances created, progressive carries etc let alone amongst other AMs.

Fucking Eric Garcia has better xA stats than Gavi who is 18th in squad and only Bernal of starters this season has less progressive carries in the whole squad.

While at same time his pass % is poor despite doing little positive with ball which is usually a trade off for players. Likewise his misscontrols and disposession stats are both in top 7 in team when every player worse for those expected to create, driblle, scoring more and all but Olmo are front line players.

He has to get better. Its almost impossible to get any worse.

What speciality does Gavi bring to the side? I'm not talking about his strengths but abilities that actually stand out. For example someone like Fermin brings runs in deep and goal threat, in addition to always hustling. You look at a top XI and know exactly what each and everyone are supposed to do. Xavi/Iniesta, Modric/Kroos etc. Similar players but with very clear roles and strengths.

Gavi feels like the 11th player, the player who is there to make up the numbers. He needs to find his proper role.
People might say he's versatile. Versatile usually means you're not good enough to be a starter and have a proper role, like Sergi Roberto, like Nacho, like Ferran. A guy like Pedri can play AM (better than Gavi) but he's so damn good at CM that it's out of question which means his "versatility" isn't necessary.

Otherwise you'll get tossed around at AM when Olmo/Fermin are out, at CM when Pedri/Frenkie/Casado don't play or at LW when Rapha/Ferran are out. And when all are fit you have no place all of a sudden.

How is he versatile? He's one of the least versatile players in the squad. He can't play DM because he's not positional, he can't play at 10 because he has no creativity or goal threat, he can't play in attack/defense. He can only be Pedri's sub.

I'm not his hater but I would love to see how his career would turn out if he wasn't Barca's La Masia favorite. Imagine he stayed at Betis, would he be a starter for them? Would he have status and salary like he has now? Would he win Golden Boy? I don't think so.

Everybody wanted Gavi and Pedri to become new Xavi Iniesta but that will never happen, the real deal is only Pedri.

But you didn't believe Pedri was the real deal a few months ago.

Moral of the story give it time.

Luis Enrique
Xavi
Del a Fuente
Flick

All rate him highly, 4 coaches are definitely wrong...

Or maybe he just came back from a ACL injured that typical takes 2 years to come fully recover from

1 for the injury
1 to start finding your feet on the pitch again.
